The Dems by and large lent vocal opposition to these institutions more because the same were promoted by Bush than out of any real concern for civil liberties, in fact the liberals that seem to be running the Democratic party seem to espouse the nanny state concept like no DP incarnation I've seen before

I guess I read it more as a "don't expect anything to be different" piece. Which I completely agree with. I -don't- the Dems will lift a finger to turn back the clock on the Patriot Act, MCA. And of course I agree with you on your point about libertarians. I wouldn't vote for either of the major parties, with very few exceptions, like Ron Paul (who really is Republican in name only).
