(no subject)

LJ is a convenient place for my notes, so now that school is back in I will be posting frequently. I will try to keep it behind a cut if it is longer than a couple paragraphs.

I'm still waiting to see how this class pans out.

Conducting research

Research (at least in this class) is collaborative rather than competitive

Necc. skills for research
+ long attention span (persistance, planning, motivation)
+ accessing and using resources (libraries, collegues, connections)
+ puzzle-solving and problem-solving (observing, reasoning, and the method)
+ writing, editing, more writing (story telling, question asking)
Professor then goes down the list asking about our level of skill

Me: I have a decent attention span as long as I care, but if I don't care I have no motivation
Everything else, I am mediocre to decent at. I can write well, but it is a horrific struggle to do so.

Teacher makes joke - "how many of you are good at networking?"
"No, well then maybe you should be on the statistics end."

Statisics - getting good data is as important as knowing how to interpret the numbers
You need to know enough about the analysis to appreciate how it works so you can ask the relevant questions
I think I can deal with this

Tone of research in social science - is it a family gathering or a court of law?
Sometimes either, sometimes both
Apparently we are going for family gathering in this class
I just hope it isn't like some of my family gatherings

The Research Process
lifted from Creswell
Six Stages
+ Identify research problem
+ Review the literature
+ Specify a purpose for the research
+ Collect data
+ Analyze and interpret data
+ Report and evaluate research

(and this is pretty much how the class will go)
"Creswell makes it seem formulaic, routine, and smooth. It's not."

Identifying a research problem.
- what is the problem
- why is it relevant
- who cares if we study it
