What Now?
When I was fourteen, my brother told me that the moment anything is done, it is only a memory. It seems odd that this is true, but just think: everything that has ever happened to us is now just something we remember. Yesterday was the last day of high school, and today it is only a memory. Though we will never forget our time here, Calabasas High School will never again be the overwhelming presence it has been for the last four years of our lives.
As time passes, some of our memories will fade. Those that endure will become skewed by time, as what was once trivial becomes more meaningful and what was once a pleasure becomes a pain. Perhaps the dull hours of community service completed for college applications will provide an inspiration for a future career. On the other hand, maybe someday the freedom we felt when we learned to drive will become tainted by long commutes and hours of chauffeuring children. But no matter how they change, we will always hold on to our own distinct memories.
In the future, these high school experiences will serve to guide us. It is here that we have learned how to handle many real-life dilemmas and how we respond to difficult situations. Consider all of the challenges that seemed impossible to complete, the all-nighters and study sessions to try to grasp new ideas, the changes in friends that seemed unacceptable. Not only did we achieve all of these “impossible” tasks, we grew stronger because of them. We discovered what we can endure, and how we manage to survive. All of this new knowledge has led to a better understanding of ourselves; we are more familiar with who we are and with what we want our lives to become.
There are nearly 400 graduates here today, each of us with our own unique view of our days at Calabasas High. Beginning tomorrow we all have three options of how to utilize these memories. One choice is to live forever in the past, dwelling in our glory days and consistently measuring our current status against our past successes. Another option is to focus only on the future; constantly struggling to reach new goals and never being satisfied with what we have. Fortunately, there is one more alternative: live in the moment and appreciate the beauty of life. Allow your present to be enriched by your memories, but never overshadowed by your past. Always strive for your goals but make sure you enjoy the process of achieving them.
Start by looking at today. What does graduation mean to you? Is it the end of the best years of your life and the beginning of an adulthood that will never compare? Or, is it just one task completed in an endless series that you must endure before you can begin to relax and enjoy your life? Hopefully, graduation is neither of these. Today should be a very special day for us, in a life full of special days. The past is over. We cannot let our memories weigh too heavily on us, whether they are good or bad. The future is not here yet and who knows what it will bring? High School, with its responsibilities and its fun times, is the past. And College, with its responsibilities and its fun times, is the future. Today we are between the past and the future. Let this summer be a time to practice enjoying whatever comes our way, enjoying now.
Today we have a freedom that we have never had before. We will never again go to school with these people, and never again need to fear what they think. However, we will also never have another opportunity to truly get to know one another. Throughout Senior year we have all had college in mind, and many of us know our fellow classmates' plans for the future. But what do we know about who these people are right now? Look around, do you know the name of everyone in your row? These are our peers, and this is our final chance to learn more about them. This is an opportunity for us to begin living in the moment. Now is our chance to appreciate the life we have and to enjoy the memories we are creating.
and tell me what you think.
