IDENTITY AND PASSPORT SERVICE POLICY REVIEW
Given the importance of the issue, I find unacceptable the lack of transparency of this ongoing “review” which was first hinted at in a Home Office announcement last September in the immediate wake of an Australian federal government revision of policy over the process of obtaining an Australian passport with non gender-specific ‘X’ in place of gendered ‘M’ or ‘F’; and then confirmed in the coalition government’s outline document that signified the launch of trans* equality action plan in December.
The secretive review is due to conclude next February but with no definitive assurance that IPS will consider the needs of non-gendered transpeople within their decision making or that the governing authorities would be prepared to incorporate ‘X’ as a necessary provision in order that non-gendered are not forced to deny the core identity in order to obtain a UK passport and that non-gendered who happen to be British are not forced to carry a personal identification document that is misrepresentative of the core identity and that furthermore negates the identity of the holder, who is forced to become an unwilling colluder in per own social invisibility.
Earlier today I submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and asked that IPS should release the relevant documentation containing the details of the policy review to date. I do not anticipate that IPS will be accommodative or straightforward in its response but I can only try.
