Family Trees

Mar 22, 2007 17:30

As A Secret Gate progresses, it's getting a little hard to remember who's who in the extended families. A reader wrote me earlier today to ask if I had a set of family trees for my OC Took and Brandybuck families, and if I'd be willing to post it. As it happens, I do have a rather extensive one, and after a crash course in LJ formatting, I offer a ( Read more... )

This is a great way to keep track of your characters!

Well, they were getting a bit unwieldy! And I always love it when a book has a family tree, so this is fun to keep up.

Ahhh! Thanks so much for doing this!

I love this story, and I really love these families. You've made them very 'real' to me, and I appreciate being able to see just where each of them fits in the scheme of things.

So glad it helps. I see GW has pointed out that I missed something-I'll be editing directly!

This was an excellent idea. It's fun to have it all posted out. I LOVE the story behind Berry's name. It fits with everything and pays tribute to so many. You are so good at this business of naming hobbits.

I notice that there are no dates of birth for Laurelin and Galen. Was that done for a reason or have you not completely decided on their ages?

Arrgghh! You're quite right-I just overlooked the dates in the scramble to reformat. I shall add them immediately! Thank you for finding this!

Oh, and thank you, thank you for the nod to Berry's name-I was so proud of myself! :D

This is wonderful! I have always loved family trees...ever since as a teenager I would sit with an encyclopedia and trace royal family tree lines...how nerdy is THAT?!!

Just a quick question on Berry's name. You sais that "There are two Elvish translations of ‘Rose’ in the Epilogue in The End of the Third Age: Beril and Meril." Where can I find that? Is that in the books?

I am an absolute sucker for a family tree--I used to do the same thing as you, still do on occasion, actually! If they put the people in the Bible in family trees, I'd know lots more than I do; you can learn a lot from them ( ... )

Very cool! Is this completely separate from the HoME series?

If I understand it correctly now, it's actually a subset of the HoME series, published in its own little 4-volume set. Eight volumes are HoME, with the Lays of Beleriand, Lost Tales, etc. and then this little set makes up the rest of it. Tons of material!

Have stayed up way too late and was just about to retire when I ran across your "Secret Gate" at SoA. Dreamflower's mentioned it a few times, and Larner, IIRC, as a good read... but I never seem to have time to read, lately. Took a few swift sips of the first chapter and it is truly lovely stuff.

Am dropping with sleep after being up for too many hours in a row. What I was able to read before one eye closed and the other started to droop was delightful, however. Looking forward to reading the *entire* first chapter, and following, at a little more length and a little less haste.

But now "to bed" as a certain fellow once said.

Took the liberty of friending your LJ, hope you don't mind.

I know about the difficulty finding time to read; sometimes it seems there are not enough hours in the day! So I thank you so much for taking a look at ASG and hope you'll continue to find things there to make it worthwhile.

I do not mind at ALL being friended--thank you! May I friend you back?
