This would be what motivated me to make a LJ post: please name your top 10 romantic comedies, friends. Define "romantic comedy" however you see fit. (That sentence makes it sound like I want you to go indie or weird -- I don't, I just want to know your favorites. If your favorites are "You've Got Mail" and "Love Actually", that's what you should ( Read more... )

YOU GUYS HAVE MUCH BETTER TASTE THAN THE VULTURE COMMENTS I WAS READING AT WORK, thank god (I knew this would be the case). I had to scroll through like twenty comments before anybody got to Definitely Maybe, and nobody got to The Proposal. There shouldn't be a wrong answer to this question but if such a thing were possible, THEY WERE ALL WRONG.

UNRANKED AND UNSCIENTIFIC because otherwise I will agonize over order so long that I'll never post this comment:

Heartbreaker/L'arnacouer
When Harry Met Sally
You've Got Mail
27 Dresses
Anastasia
Fired Up

Roman Holiday, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, What's Your Number, No Strings Attached, My Best Friend's Wedding, MISS CONGENIALITY I GUESS SNEAKING IT IN ON THE "DOES THIS COUNT I SAY YES" RULE, The Philadelphia Story, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, and I don't know what I'd put in the last spot, maybe How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? The version of Moulin Rouge that ends 5 minutes earlier than the DVD? IDK IT'S TOO MUCH PRESSURE.

I heard No Strings Attached was bad and never watched it!! Whoever said that must have been wrong. I would trust anything anyone sandwiched between Miss Congeniality, Clueless, and the Philadelphia Story.

The version of Moulin Rouge that ends 5 minutes earlier than the DVD?
HAHAHA :'(

She's the Man, Spellbound (aka Chilling Romance), Seducing Mr. Perfect, Something New, Sabrina (1995 remake), Practical Magic, Pride & Prejudice (2005 DUH), Coming to America, Mansfield Park (1995), THE CUTTING EDGE.

HALF OF THESE AREN'T EVEN "COMEDIES" OR "ROMANTIC" AND I HAVE HORRENDOUS "TASTE" BUT I STICK BY THIS LIST UNTIL MY LAST DYING BREATH!!!

WAIT I HAVE MORE.

Bride & Prejudice, Someone Like You, Better off Dead, Loving Leah, Antique, THE WEDDING DATE, the Lucy Liu Lifetime miniseries Marry Me!

If you want I can give you very long exclamation-filled non-explanations about why I love all these movies so much BECAUSE I HAVE VERY STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT ALL OF THEM.

You asked for it, you dummy!!!

She's the Man: I mean do I even have to explain this one?! Twelfth Night is my favorite Shakespeare, CROSSDRESSING IS THE BEST TROPE, the only time (other than Step Up) Channing Tatum has looked like the handsome heartthrob everyone claims he is now, Amanda Bynes!!! :((( Everything about this movie is so much better than it has any right to be. OMG David Cross.

Spellbound (aka Chilling Romance): You can watch this on hulu! Lee Min-ki and Son Ye-jin! It didn't really hit me until I saw this movie a few years back just how AWFUL American romcoms have gotten BECAUSE KOREANS DO IT SO MUCH BETTER. There's something disingenuous about American romcoms now, I don't know what it is, it's just so obvious that it's studios putting together bland actors with a bland script to make as much bland money as possible. Nobody MEANS it anymore! Nobody MEANS their romcoms!!! I think we can all agree that Koreans ALWAYS mean their romcoms, always. Every single sappy, heartwarming, heart-wrenching moment, they always mean ( ... )

HAHAHAH DON'T YOU LIKE HOW I'M MAKING ALL OF YOU DO THIS BUT I HAVEN'T CHOSEN?? I have a list of like fifteen still open in notepad? Cheater cheater pumpkin eater?

EXCELLENT CHOICES, though. Wasn't Crazy Stupid Love unexpectedly kind of great?? I'm having trouble with Populaire because I think I was too recently charmed by it to make an objective decision about whether it's an honorable mention or whether it's top 10 material.

also I really hope storylines don't count because if so I'm pretty sure I have to pick the Jennifer Aniston/Ben Affleck storyline out of (the incredibly stupid) He's Just Not That Into You over actual whole movies that I love, AND I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO SACRIFICE THE SPACE.

Um, in no particular order:
Love Actually
When Harry Met Sally
13 Going on 30
Definitely, Maybe
Clueless
Miss Congeniality
Sense & Sensibility (1995) (it's not that I don't love P & P obscenely, BECAUSE I DO, but this one is mine)
Holiday
Bringing Up Baby
The Philadelphia Story

Hate that it has to get so clogged up by Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn, BUT... it has to?!?!

YEAH, exactly, like, it's too new! I've only seen it one time! But it was DARLING. I loved that you picked Love Me If You Dare, too, btw. I've only seen that once and it was awhile ago, but it was MARVELOUS.

Multi-story romcoms are stupid. It's obviously mostly a technique to capitalize on the genre -- both because Love, Actually was a success and because if they tell a BUNCH of different stories, then everyone who likes romcoms will go! (No.) I'm so over it.
