This would be what motivated me to make a LJ post: please name your top 10 romantic comedies, friends. Define "romantic comedy" however you see fit. (That sentence makes it sound like I want you to go indie or weird -- I don't, I just want to know your favorites. If your favorites are "You've Got Mail" and "Love Actually", that's what you should ( Read more... )

I DON'T EVEN KNOW? I'M REALY BAD AT PICKING FAVORITES? But looking through these is gooooooooood inspiration in helping me come up with answers.

Love Actually! Populaire! I CAN'T REMEMBER! 13 Going on 30, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, She's the Man (which I would NOT have thought of as a romantic comedy at first thought, even though it is romantic AND comedic), You've Got Mail. GOTTA GO FIND THAT TIME WHEN I LISTED MY FAVORITE MOVIES ON FACEBOOK. MAYBE Some Kind of Wonderful?

Why am I shouting.

Letters to Juliet!!!! Once upon a time, I would've listed Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!. Strictly Ballroom, even though I don't know if that would be classified as a rom com? Sweet Home Alabama, probs. HOW MANY HAVE I EVEN LISTED, ALEX. OMG, I've already listed like 8 definites, aaaaah.

There's a Tumblr that I submitted a lot of rom com recs to, but I can't think for the life of me what they were!

THIS IS HARD.

MOSTLY WHAT I AM GETTING FROM THIS COMMENT IS OMG, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY, must go back and rewatch immediately

(and also that you have good taste!)

(ALSO HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I am obviously going to say it again, and part of me is like "how silly to say it here, when I'm going to say it more and bigger later", but I also can't write a comment to you on your birthday without saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLAIRE, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLAIRE!!!!)

OH MAN, what a good question!!! 10 Things I Hate About You, She's The Man, Love Actually, What's Your Number, Friends With Benefits, The Proposal, Sweet Home Alabama, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, 13 Going On 30, and Win A Date With Tad Hamilton. I think. weirdly, I don't even like How To Win A Guy In 10 Days THAT much, but I've seen it so many times - definitely more than anything else on this list except maybe 10 Things I Hate About You - and it's so quintessentially romcom to me that it had to make the list even if there are others I enjoy more. ditto Sweet Home Alabama, really, except I haven't watched that one as many times.

HONORABLE MENTION: Wedding Crashers (I'm using the rule!!!!!!!!! it's a romcom!!!!! a romcom masquerading as a dudebro gross out Vince Vaughn movie, which is even better somehow)

I HAVEN'T SEEN WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON, and after all of this post + all of you good people with good taste saying it was a favorite I feel like that's a little bit of a travesty. I love your criteria, though, like, there really is something to be said for picking romcoms that are prototypically romcom. How To Win A Guy and Sweet Home Alabama really are both that.

AND WEDDING CRASHERS TOTALLY IS A ROMCOM, although it's also weird because I don't totally enjoy it as one -- like, I liked it as a movie, but I wasn't super into the ships??? In my favorites I am. Although Vince Vaughn/Isla Fisher was fun.

AM I WAY TOO LATE FOR THIS? I'm glad you posted though actually bc I started my Anne of the Island reread the other day and thought of you! and I wanted to mention it somehow but didn't know how to get in touch since lj isn't like current anymore or whatever. But then you posted, hurrah! GREAT TIMING ALSO BC I WATCHED WHEN HARRY MET SALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY!! and I really loved it and it def has a place in my top 10 now. also: 10 things I hate about you, clueless, bridget jones's diary, bend it like beckham, you've got mail, tangled, enchanted, 27 dresses, the other katherine heigl one with the baby, my best friend's wedding, how to lose a guy in 10 days, 13 going on 30, step up, step up 2 (are these comedies? the acting is comedic? BA DUM TSSS but for real I love them). THAT'S NOT 10 BUT THAT'S ALMOST 10? there are so many disney movies I would include as well if I could. also I looooooooooove she's the man but I guess I don't really consider it a rom com? I guess it's got romance and comedy but I always think of it firmly as A ( ... )

YES YOU'RE TOO LATE, SORRY. (Kidding of course!!) But yes perfect timing apparently! I love that even though lj doesn't exist and I don't even post anymore I still have a pretty good number of friends who ghost along in their flists so I can pick your brains at times like these. I LOVE THIS COMMENT, I love Anne of the Island (AND NOW I WANT TO REREAD, it's been a super long time since I've done the whole series but all my books are in Colorado and I'm in California ;_;) . Also isn't When Harry Met Sally magnificent???? The first time I saw it I was like "HOW DID I GO SO LONG WITHOUT THIS PERFECT ROMCOM IN MY LIFE". It really is the ultimate ( ... )

haha idk I always feel like lj entries have time limits these days, like if you comment past the day it was posted the poster'll have moved on :( that's so sad! I started rereading last year (or the year before? omg has it been that long?) and I thought I'd get through all of them but I got through TWO. absurd. part of it is I think I lost a bunch of the series when we moved when I was 16 and always hoped I would just find them buried somewhere so I never replaced my copies :( I took advantage of cyber monday sales though and FINALLY ordered the boxed set, I'm so excited! AND ANNE OF THE ISLAND IS MY FAVE, you should borrow it from a library and reread it anyways tbh. Do you have twitter or some place I can pick your brain about fave scenes or will you be around if I leave a comment here now and again ( ... )

LOL I'M THE OPPOSITE, I always feel like a lj post "expires" when someone posts again so now they like -- never expire, bc no one ever posts. But aw omg that sucks that you lost your original copies -- I love mine, my grandparents gave them to me :( I have all of them except Anne of the Island, which I had to replace bc it broke I read it so many times. I SHOULD TOTALLY GET IT FROM THE LIBRARY, that's such a good idea. I do have twitter but o m g how could I possibly talk about my favorite Anne of the Island scenes in 140 characters!?!?!? That's like. LJ/email stuff. I need the rambling space ( ... )

WASN'T CRAZY STUPID LOVE LIKE, SO EXCELLENT??? I really wasn't expecting to enjoy that one as much as I ultimately ended up enjoying it. Date Night was super fun too, I forgot about that.

ALSO I HAVE SEEN THAT!! I thought it was super duper brilliant conceptually -- like, oh my god, what kind of creative genius was behind the ideas of that?? But I wasn't thaaaaaat into the minutae of the writing. It sucks because I feel like it's hard for writers to be really excellent at both the big amazing IDEAS and also the execution of a story around those ideas -- when I finished that movie I was still way more excited about the ROMANCE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE FROM UPSIDE DOWN-OPPOSED WORLDS!!! stuff than most of the actual plot.
