Kids are like riding a bike. Wait. That came out wrong. Um.
Seriously though, it really is the more you're exposed the better you get with them. It's hard to imagine being a kid because their brains honestly work differently than adults brains. It's equally difficult to imagine being someone with mania or schizophrenia or autism if you haven't been around those people a lot. And the more you're around them, the more empathy you have, the more comfortable and easy it is to interact with them.
Transgender representations in media is something I've more or less given up hope on. I had no idea (other than crossdressing punchlines) until I actually met some transgender people and realized that FtM people were basically jsut guys, MtF people were basically just girls, and you could spend the entire conversation staring at an adam's apple, or you could dish about how hard it is to be a 6' tall girl and buy pants (it's ( ... )

I'm all with you on rewarding people for being good. It's like...you're SUPPOSED to do that. Why should we reward you for just doing what you're supposed to do?
Interesting you dislike characters with the same things you like about itself...it's possible that you've got too much overlap? I find when I encounter characters too much like myself I dislike them (of course, usually it's because I see things in them I hate about myself..*cough*Suzaku*cough*)

The avoidance of evil isn't laudable. Or something. Maybe.
I think you're probably right. The thing is when I deconsctruct why I dislike a characters it's often because of a trait they share with me. Suzaku's wishywashy willingness to compromise rather than stand for something... totally me. Lelouch's prioritizing of what's personally important to him over what's better overall... again, me. And with characters I actively dislike it's even more emarrassingly apparent - Charles's difficulty with forgiveness and moving on, Marianne's desire to do what she wants for her children rather than what they would want (for their own good, of course ( ... )

I felt very sympathetic towards Shinji. Didn't really annoy me, precisely because we share many self-confidence, identity and other teenage issues. (I don't identify with Suzaku, because Suzaku's self-loathing is induced by guilt). And I hated Suzaku for his mulish righteous attitude so hard.
I do gravitate more towards characters that have nothing in common with me:)

It's the duller characters - Gino, Nunnally, even Ougi - who would actually make better people. And even they have traits that would be awful in a friend, and those same traits make them less boring as characters.
But that's not how we judge characters in shows. The entertainment factor outweighs real life likability. Which is why Seishirou is an awesome character and a horrific human being. XD ♥
Yuu Yuu Hakusho is actually one of the most obvious examples of this I can think of. Kuwabara is fan-hated and relatively quite boring, and by far the best person out of the four heroes.

And you'll never know you area boring character until you're in a story. Take Bilbo Baggins, for example.
You commented somewhere how evil takes too much effort. That's also true. Nii and all his degrees and experiments XD
It's very debatable, but Seishirou strikes me as... lazy. Not laid-back, but genuinely lazy.
