I can understand why you don't want to but, in the situation, I don't think he cares how you are as long as you are there for him.

here's my two cents! i lost my dad a few months ago. luckily and unluckily it was sudden. he didn't suffer. but you've got your dad around now, so even if it hurts, be with him as much as possible or you might regret it later. be there to see him get better or worse, whatever it ends up being. more pain now means less pain later, maybe?
