What If episode 1

I've been looking forward to the What If series, because I love AUs. And yet, I find myself ambivalent about the first episode.

I'd seen the trailers, I knew Peggy would become Captain Carter, and I saw Sebastian Stan doing voicework, so I knew Bucky would be in it. I didn't think much about Steve one way or the other, but thought some Peggy and Bucky bonding, friendship, would be cool.

Then Steve is there, but gets shot, and I thought, this'll be a bummer if Steve dies. He survives but Peggy becomes enhanced and it's similar to The First Avenger movie, yay Captain Carter! But then Steve shows up in the Hydra Stomp armor and I felt a little...really? Why can't Peggy be a superhero without her boyfriend in a super suit to back her up? Because she wasn't in a super suit in the movie, and Steve did fine until the very end.

But I thought, well, if Steve being around means that they both survive the war, and I can think about Valkyrie!Peggy and shrimpy!Steve getting together, having a nice life after the war, maybe kids...yeah, I can go there. That would be cool.

I got confused how Hydra suddenly got the tesseract back, before realizing it must have been powering Steve's suit. And then there's a big battle with an octopus, (um...what? why an octopus?) and Peggy disappears for 70 years, and yet somehow Nick Fury is waiting in a European castle to welcome her back. I guess SHIELD was still monitoring the castle?

So no, Peggy and Steve still don't get their happy ending. Steve and Bucky presumably go home and have good lives and the Stucky people can write their get-together fics with shrimpy!Steve mourning Peggy, that's cool for them.

But I'm still a bit...why can't Peggy be a superhero without her boyfriend in a super suit to back her up? Why couldn't they have written that? Let the general feel sorry for Steve getting shot and bring him on staff as a secretary and let Steve wait and worry in camp.

Also, it seemed weirdly pandering to the American audience that she's never called Captain Britannica.

I'm suddenly feeling a little more cautious about this series and whether I'll love it. Because yes, the premise for each show might be cool, but if they're mainly going to try to mirror the various movies, I think I'm going to be left thinking...fanfic would do it better.
