Summary: He's the kind of person who unwittingly commands attention wherever he goes, and regardless of Kyungsoo's heart pounding loudly in his ears, his mind screaming at him to look away and return to his essay, his gaze is glued to Jongin's attractive figure.
Kyungsoo always gets coffee at 9:00 sharp on weekends. He likes coffee. It makes him feel awake when he can't get enough sleep, and perks him up when he's had a long week. He likes to sit in the coffee shop with his laptop and work on the countless number of assignments due at assorted times in the upcoming weeks.
Kyungsoo is punctual and likes order. He likes to get things done, even if it means sacrificing sleep or sanity, as long as he keeps his grades up. It's impossible for him to go about things any other way, and he's quite content with the way things are right now.
Sipping his coffee, he turns his attention to the essay he's currently working on. It's a tough cookie, this essay. He's supposed to be analyzing a novel they read in his literature class and focusing on one of the minor characters who showed almost no character development at all. Considering that Kyungsoo is a pretty static person himself, this particular assignment should be on the easy side. But he finds that he can't relate to this character in the slightest.
She is hopelessly in love with a playboy, and despite the myriad of times she gets her heartbroken, she always goes back to him. Kyungsoo thinks she's a complete imbecile, and if he were in her situation, he'd leave the sick bastard without a second thought. He can't understand why she'd want to stay with him, even after all the pain he's caused her. Why should she desire to be with him when she knows he's just going to hurt her?
Sighing with frustration at his half-completed thesis, Kyungsoo pushes his laptop away and looks out the cafe window, coffee in his hands as he lazily sips at it.
And that's when he sees it; a familiar face, tanned skin, a well-built body, chocolate brown hair, and a smirk suited for the gods. Kyungsoo would recognize that person anywhere, and it is that person that makes him think of all the things he tries desperately to avoid.
It reminds him of a time when he was less systematic, when he was willing to break away from routine and comfort to have fun. It reminds him of the intense feelings that overwhelmed him and controlled his life until he almost gave up everything for that person, until the only thing he knew was that person's name: Kim Jongin.
His chest tightens and his breath quickens as Jongin walks into the coffee shop, approaching the counter and leaning against it, smirk still in place. He's the kind of person who unwittingly commands attention wherever he goes, and regardless of Kyungsoo's heart pounding loudly in his ears, his mind screaming at him to look away and return to his essay, his gaze is glued to Jongin's attractive figure. It's entirely unfair how the simple action of walking into the cafe can throw Kyungsoo's focus to the dogs.
Jongin orders a vanilla mocha frappuccino, reminds Kyungsoo of all the unhealthy things Jongin put into his body... not just sugar.
And as Jongin gets his drink and turns around, he locks eyes with Kyungsoo. Time seems to freeze, and Kyungsoo thinks his heart stops beating altogether, only to start beating again at four times its usual speed when a full smile breaks across Jongin's face and he walks towards Kyungsoo.
No! shouts Kyungsoo's mind. Don't come over here! But it's too late as Jongin pulls out the chair opposite of him and sits down.
"Hello, love," Jongin says, his voice silkier than the cream Kyungsoo puts in his coffee.
And everything clicks for Kyungsoo; why the character always went back to the playboy, why she stayed with him when she knew she'd get hurt. Kyungsoo gets it now.
She loves him. And it's for that reason she'll never be able to break free of him.
"H-hello," Kyungsoo stammers in reply.
He's really no different from her, after all.
