in some cultures though they refer to how old you are as how many years you are in, rather than have had. like if you are 10, you are in your 11th year and some culters say you are therefore 11thish. my dad is turning 69 next year and he therefore will be in his 70th yeah and refers to being 70 as at his next birthday
Yeah, that's what I thought too, but my sister tells me that Japanese do it the same way we do (and she's lived there long enough, and celebrated enough birthdays there), so unless there's an obscure tradition she doesn't know about (which is possible but I'd rate as unlikely) there's an error. If anyone does know of said tradition, please let me know.
