Hmmm....I guess you also have to decide exactly what you want out of what you are doing.
I would say that if you want a picture that you feel that you could step into and be fully immersed into the displayed culture...well....I don't think that your picture does that.
But, if you want to give people the idea that "this is a city built on a lake of lava" then you succeed at that. I could certainly see that picture in any number of gaming books that I've flipped through. Your picture, in my opinion, seems to give the concept of what you wanted, and then lets the viewer run with it if they want to.
Is it amazing? Well, no. For amazing you would wind up needing to spend so much time on little details to make a pulled back city shot impressive. As it is, I would rate it above a 5 yr old with crayons - more like early college years with new tools.
