Oh, yeah, I have caught cats (well, one particular cat) doing that when the box isn't up to her standards. But this one decides to pee on anything lying flat on the floor--like, say, a backpack. I guess it my (and your) own fault for not attending to our primary duty in life, i.e., service of the resident feline(s).
Oh, that box was scooped clean at 7PM last night, and even with two cats, there's no way it was bad enough to pee elsewhere. I suspect some sort of territorial dispute over my floral girlie tools, even though both cats are boys.
"Isn't up to her standards" is, of course, dependent on the individual cat. Some have higher standards than others, such as "Follow me around and immediately clean the box after I use it; allow no other cat to use it." (Has anyone ever figured out how to get multiple cats to use their own separate boxes and no others? I doubt it.)
In my previous place, I had two different boxes in two different parts of the apartment, and each cat used but one. It actually didn't work out much better, since both boxes were fairly small and got smelly almost immediately. Here, we have one ginormous covered box with a very deep (10+ lbs at any given time) bed of litter.
It was a gift, along with a wrench, screwdriver, box cuter, and measuring tape, and it came that way. If you google something like "floral tools," I bet you could find similar sets -- they seem to come in a wide range of bright patterns. Even better, the hammer has four additional screwdrivers stored within it! Bob initially made fun of my floral tools ("Don't let anyone we know see you using these," is what he said) but every piece of art hung in this apartment, along with a multitude of other tasks, has been done with the help of my Girlie Tool Set (tm).

Did you ever see the "Gilmore Girls" episode, where Lorelei prepares Rory's hammer for her Habitat for Humanity community stint? IIRC hers has a pink boa thingie...
