Title: Habits
Summary: Tom begins to see behind some of Alex's peculiar habits.
"Alex?"
"Yeah?" Alex glanced up from the history-book he was revising. Quirking an eyebrow, he seemed to give Tom his full attention. "What is it?"
Tom shifted a bit in his seat as he fiddled with his coke.
They were seated in a quiet cafe located a couple of blocks from the school.
"I just wondered..." Tom stuttered a bit, "That is to say... I've noticed that you always sit with your back against the wall when we're out somewhere. I just wanted to know if that was because of... well... you know!" He waved vaguely with his right hands as if to emphasize a point he'd made.
Alex relaxed visibly as he sagged against the wall, drawing the book closer to himself as he did. "Yeah," he admitted, "I just feel safer."
Figuring he'd explained enough, he immersed himself back in the book, though he was careful to always split some of his attention on his surroundings.
Tom quieted down, but continued to fiddle with his beverage for a while before he again ventured to open his mouth. "And the tea or the hot coffee you always order when we're out... does that have something to do with your job as well?"
Alex didn't even bother to look up from the book this time as he answered. "Yeah... it makes a great distraction when I throw it in someone's face if I ever need to get out quickly..."
"Oh..." Tom stuttered as he suddenly saw Alex's steaming-hot coffee-cup in a whole new light.
