I think I just got honked at while walking down the street in Brattleboro. (And by that I mean, I definitely got honked at but I only think it was by people I don't know.) It's the first time that's ever happened to me here, and in fact, I was momentarily confused by it. It was weird...not getting honked at, but forgetting that that happens. ( Read more... )

that kinda makes me sad, too.

and also glad that people mistake me for a 12 year old boy and leave me the fuck alone.

Well, I do remember getting a lot of honks when I was 12...but I definitely looked like a girl, so there ya go.

yeah, that also makes me sad.

i don't really understand what makes anyone think that people like being honked at by strangers. it would just scare/startle the shit out of me.

Well, you know, it shows that men are attracted to me, and OBviously that is my main goal in life- to be attractive to men I don't know. So when men honk at me I am glad that they are letting me know how purty I am. *eyeroll* Nice to know I can still get honked at while wearing an oversized sweater and long pants, and without brushing my hair or wearing makeup or shaving. Maybe these guys were trying to applaud my efforts to not fit into the normal standard of beauty? (Not that they'd be able to tell about most of that from a moving car, though.)

And yeah, it did startle me, especially because there weren't any other cars at the intersection at that moment, so there wasn't any other traffic noise.

The only similar thing I have experienced in Brattleboro though was on the way to your apartment when we went to see Girlyman. That was MUCH creepier though, partly because it was by a couple of pretty old men, partly because we were BOTH on the side walk so they were only a couple of feet away, and mostly due to whatever they were saying to me (I forget what exactly that was now). It's the only time I've actually been shaken up by being harrassed/commented on/honked at by strangers in lots of years. I guess when it's personal comments instead of a generic honk with no words, and without the space of a road and a car in between, it feels a lot more threatening? I remember telling Charlie about it not too long after, and that I still got a little flutter of weird nervousness when I was thinking and talking about it then. So yeah, I'm sure it happens in Brattleboro too, today just made me realize that it hasn't happened to me nearly as much as here as it did in Michigan.

Um, no. I mean, maybe, but I'm not especially from the backwoods, although I have gotten drunken invites to "go out camp" with guys late at night in my dad's rural small town. But mostly I'm thinking about stuff that's happened in my very suburban area, where I don't think there are too many hicks ( ... )
