So a while ago, I read on
rheasilvia 's journal this
really interesting fic post. About broccoli. And a test. The idea is that a couple is in the store one needs broccoli and must convey to the other that he needs it, without shouting. It tests their level of communication. She even gave some background for it! She chose Junno/Ryo to test it on and it was just so adorable that I felt KoyaShige must also undergo the test. I think this is the first piece of real fluff I've written. :D
The Broccoli Conundrum: KoyaShige Style
Part 1: Shige
Crap. I forgot to get broccoli. Shige looks at the line he’s in which is longer than he likes and he’s already been waiting ten minutes to get close to the counter and he has things to do, damnit. Then he spots Koyama coming toward him and he tries to flag him down but the idiot is looking everywhere but at him until he is almost on him.
“Ah! Just in time,” he says and obliviously squeezes past some ladies who try to give him murderous looks but just end up looking confused. “I couldn’t even see you with all of these people around,” he says happily, though how he could be happy about being in an overcrowded grocery store, Shige has no idea.
He is pretty irritated and totally not excited about having to go back around just to get some damn broccoli and wondering if he could substitute asparagus instead and whether or not he even has any and then he watches, astonished, as Koyama pulls a crown of broccoli out of his basket and puts it on the counter.
“What?” Koyama asks, blinking at him.
“What do you need broccoli for?”
“I don’t. It’s for you.”
He pauses. “How did you know I needed broccoli?” he asks slowly.
“Didn’t you say? No? Oh. Well, I was just passing it and thought ‘Shige wants broccoli’ so I grabbed it. Isn’t that lucky?”
Weird is more along the lines he’s thinking but he guesses it doesn’t matter. He’s got the broccoli.
Part 2: Koyama
He feels like he is forgetting something. Looking over the items in his basket, he ticks off his mental list: eggs, bread, those cute little fruit snacks his nephews liked, broccoli … broccoli! He turns his head and mentally thanks his parents for giving him tall genes. Ah! Good, Shige is near the broccoli anyway. He waves his arm rather frantically and the people around him studiously ignore him. Last time he’d needed something, he’d yelled Shige’s name over the rest of the din and Shige had turned bright red and been so mad at him he wouldn’t talk to him the whole way home.
Shige finally catches his movement out of the corner of his eye and Koyama points behind the man. Shige makes a disgusted face and turns around, putting his hand over the parsnips and looking back questioningly. Shaking his head vigorously, he points left. Turnips? Left again. Shige picks up a piece of myoga ginger and shakes it at him with a mock angry face. Koyama can’t help but laugh and points right this time, giving a thumbs-up when Shige gestures to the broccoli. Koyama can see the teasing exasperation in Shige’s face and the slope of his shoulders as he picks out a crown.
Shige soon joins him in line. “Don’t forget things all the time. Why don’t you ever make a list? Must you draw attention everywhere you go?” He keeps whining half-heartedly but Koyama playfully bumps his shoulder and smiles anyway. Shige always knows what he wants … eventually.
So what do you think? Do they pass? XD
