Character's Name: Sorata Arisugawa
Series: X/1999
Timeline: Between volume 18 and 19, just after checking out of the hospital.
Canon Resource Link: Sorata's wikipedia blurb.

Personality:

There really aren't a lot of hidden depths to Sorata. Not that this is a bad thing! It's just that with him, what you see is basically what you get: friendly, outgoing, supportive, but also a bit of a tease, Sorata spends most of X acting as Kamui's wing-man, keeping track of the other Dragons of Heaven and making sure Kamui eats dinner. In fact, for a while in the series, Sorata seemed to act as the de facto leader of the Seven Seals-Kamui wasn't able to, and no one else really wanted to. Sorata is mentioned to keep track of Karen and Aoki, as well as keep them informed, and he is the one Arashi tells Hinoto's status to, and Subaru speaks to about Kamui's well-being. It's nothing formal or major-simply that Sorata is the one who keeps track of things, to an extent.

A Buddhist monk raised on Kōya-san, the seat of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, Sorata has spent his life from age three onwards preparing to fight in the End of Days, having been told at age thirteen that it was his destiny to fight and protect 'Kamui' with his life. Although he comes off as extremely cheerful and somewhat flippant, Sorata takes this duty incredibly seriously, and pretty much never lets Kamui leave his sight after they've met. In fact, the only time we've seen him annoyed in the series-not angry, but personally ticked-off, is when a character (Saiki Daisuke) expressed doubts that Kamui was, in fact, the person they had been searching and preparing for. Although he replied all smiles, Sorata was undoubtedly petty in his reply-innocently asking how Saiki's injuries (inflicted by Kamui) were doing, and pointing out that Kamui was 'Kamui,' and that Sorata could feel it because he, unlike Saiki, was one of the Dragons of Heaven.

That incident aside, however, the only times Sorata is ever shown in canon to be annoyed or angry are when his loved ones are in direct, immediate danger-he's generally an extremely good tempered, upbeat sort of guy.

Sorata tends to play the idiot, although he isn't one-he's noted in canon to be extremely perceptive when he wants to be, and extremely well-versed in the occult. If his grades in school are somewhat lower, well, math isn't as important to him, that's all. His idiot act is mostly for the benefit of his teammates-he doesn't hide his knowledge, it's not that kind of act; he just prefers to act as team cheerleader or mom, making sure his teammates are in good spirits and health. He gives pep talks to Kamui, cheers on Yuzuriha's cooking, and so on. He's also a hopeless tease-although his sense of humor isn't mean-spirited, he finds a lot hilariously funny, and teases people to get reactions or just for fun. He's lied and invented stories only to (straight-faced) explain that he made it all up; he's literally rolled on the floor laughing after Kamui was repeatedly, accidentally called small; he's cheerfully joked with Yuuto while fighting, and so on. As he himself is quick to point out, hey, he's from Osaka-it's tradition! He can switch between straight-faced joking and teasing to serious extremely quickly, which can be slightly exhausting for the people he's around. Especially Arashi.

And Arashi is important enough to register her own paragraph in this section: remember Sorata's destiny? It wasn't just to protect Kamui with his life. At age thirteen, Sorata was informed that in addition to that all, he would also die for the sake of the woman he loved. Although he appeared to be shocked by the news, by the time the series begins, Sorata is not just used to it but has embraced it, hoping only that the girl he falls for "will be hot." Shortly after meeting Arashi, a fellow teammate, for the first time, Sorata decides she's the one, and tells her as much. She is not thrilled. Despite this less-than-auspicious start, though, Arashi is very much the person most important to Sorata (although Kamui probably is a close second). He sincerely and absolutely loves her and would die for her in an instant-in fact, late in the series we find out that he'd hit her with a spell that would transfer damage done to her to him the day they met. While he loves her deeply and is shown in various CLAMP crossovers to either be married to her or just infatuated with her, Sorata never has any doubts about his destiny: he will protect her and die for her, and her thoughts on this aren't as important as her safety.

And that brings me to the last point: Sorata is incredibly fatalistic. He never shows any doubts at all about his duty or destiny, or any sign that he'd like something different or has even considered it. He's only happy-to have met Arashi, to be able to protect her, even though it means his death; to fulfill his duty to Kamui, and so on. He's never shown to wish for anything else. In a way, he's a selfish character: even though he knows he'll die and Arashi will probably be upset, he continues to pursue her romantically. It's extremely doubtful that he means anything, well, mean by this-he's just a seventeen-year-old in love. As of the point in canon I'm taking him from, he's just nearly died protecting her, coming out of a hospital stay wherein he broke several bones, suffered internal damage, and lost the use of his right hand entirely; his only reactions to all this was relief that she was unscathed, and a blithe "I'll get used to it" about the rest.
 Powers & Abilities:
  • Sorata has spent nearly all of his life training in magic and esoteric arts to fight in the End of Days. Although he prefers to not fight and is only once shown in canon to use anything close to lethal force (sort of-it can be assumed he was, but the manga cut off there), he's still noted in canon to be very powerful. He has an elemental control over lighting/electricity in particular, and is able to use it in a number of ways-offensively by summoning bolts or smaller balls of electricity, or even (somehow) defensively, to deflect attacks. He has as well a number of non-offensive abilities, although they aren't as well defined in canon. He's shown to be able to use a couple of simple, crude watching/tracking spells, but his real specialty is in making gohoudouji, 'prayer children,' familiar-like constructs that can be used as anything from messengers to guardians. He can also heal really, really fast, jump 20 feet in any direction, and has ridiculous reflexes and agility.
  • He's incredibly knowledgeable about magic, even if he rarely uses it to fight. Sorata spends most of the early volumes of X acting as Captain Exposition, explaining to Kamui and the audience any and every term, magical family, and so on. He's also implied to be well connected, in-universe-he is able to call up Subaru's grandmother with no problem, and it's implied that he knows Yuzuriha's as well. Generally speaking, if it's a traditional form of Japanese magic/spirituality, he probably knows about it. As he was raised a Buddhist monk, he also knows quite a lot about that sort of thing, and likely other eastern religions and practices. In one of his AU appearances, he was shown to be a history teacher with a special interest in myths and mythology; as this fits well with his background in X, I assume he probably knows and has an interest in that sort of thing.
  • He is surprisingly domestic, being noted to be an extremely good cook and an extremely good mother-hen type. Seriously, he will nurture you to death. He's described as CLAMP as "Kamui's older brother," and seems to be at his best in that sort of role. He can also clean and do all manner of household chores!
What items will they be bringing with them?

The clothes on his back-tee-shirt, jeans, sneakers, and four small magic amplifying pins... that are utterly useless to him with his chip in. Also his wallet, containing his school ID, a debit card, around ¥1,000, and lots and lots of receipts.

Third-Person Sample:
It took Sorata a few seconds to realize he was nervous. Figuring that out didn't do much to help the situation. It had been two and a half hours since he and Neechan had... talked in Imonoyama's information room, and the feeling had only grown since. That was another way he realized he was nervous. Sorata never usually paid time a lot of attention. His teachers would always complain- ...And there was reason number three. He wasn't usually so easily distracted in his own head.

It'd be kinda novel if it wasn't sort of weird.

Two and a half hours since she had run off in the middle of their discussion, and she hadn't said a word to him since. Sorata considered himself a pretty confident guy, but it was normal to feel-well, you know, when you're telling a girl how you feel and she just poofs away, okay, she's shy, he knew that, and Imonoyama had just kinda burst in, but she could have at least said something after, right? Like, stop staring at me or I want curry for dinner tonight or Sorata-san, you are-Actually, in his head, she didn't call him -san at all, but she also did a whole lot of other things that... weren't really the point right now. The point was-even if she didn't feel the same... she'd stop ignoring him eventually, right?  Retrospectively, Sorata didn't understand girls very well at all. It was times like this he wished he hadn't grown up in a temple, and that was why, instead of tutoring Kamui on his math homework-which Kamui insisted he didn't need, good for him, he was getting better, Sorata was proud-he was upstairs in his room, going cross-eyed at his own English homework. Because if she was going to never speak to him again, he might as well learn to be fluent in English. Maybe she'd speak to him in English.

After about an hour of this (ten minutes), there was a knock on his door, which was already open, meaning that it wasn't Kamui or Yuzuriha. Sorata dropped his textbook on his foot. "Neechan! Hey! D'ya remember the English for, for uh, the past tense of ... " Right. Now was not the time to cheat off her homework. Arashi was looking as beautiful as ever, but also a little annoyed. Considering that she wasn't looking at him and all.

"It'd time to start dinner," she said. Her voice was also very beautiful. The past tense of dream, as in, I had a dream I'd meet someone as hot as you. It took a lot of effort not to say that. "It's our turn tonight."

"Right!" He picked up his textbook and threw it on his bed and bounded over to her. "D'ya want curry? Are you still mad? Do you wanna go to a restaurant for a hot date?"

"No," Arashi replied, and pinched him.

But that was okay.

Gramps.

Hey. How's your health?

Lately, things've been real slow. I'm not complaining, but it leaves me kinda tense. I'm glad things are peaceful, but I guess I've always been kinda impatient. Don't worry! Sora-chan is keeping well and healthy, and getting along great with his friends! A guy like me is lucky to live with such beauties-I feel lucky every day! Just between you and me, I'm sure to win over that girl I told you about, any day now.

I should say, there's a reason I'm writing you besides to keep in touch. I don't know how fast word gets around to old guys on top of mountains, but Sumeragi-san went missing almost two weeks ago. I can get why he'd be lying low, but Kamui's real shaken up. Last time I tried contacting the previous head of the Sumeragi, she yelled at me a bit, and it was scary! Would you mind calling her for me? Just to pave the way. You old people get along better together, [ a doodle of a smiling face ]!

The weather in Tokyo has been getting cooler, but I'm feeling optimistic as always. I hope you're doing well, Gramps.

Love,
your cute little Sora.
