These photographs by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii are incredible. Not least because they were taken between 1909 and 1915, and in colour. But d'you know what I noticed most about them? Everything's so clean. And when there are things that are not clean, it's actual dirt that makes them so. Not pollution, graffiti or litter etc.

They are very excellent photos - the colour on the Alim Khan photo is exceptional. But I think it was added digitally, after the glass plates came into the Library of Congress, not when it was originally taken.

Wow, I'm in total awe. It's so strange that sometimes you don't think that the early 1900s were in colour.

You're totally right about everything being clean. It's amazing! How far the world has come.... we've found a way to destroy ourselves. (or rather, a million ways)...

Thanks for revealing these images to me - it is truly a foreign emotion to be amazed by the genuinely 'new' in the 21st century on this planet, and hence an altogether rare one. This is enhanced all the more by the fact that we are all being astounded by seeing images of the PAST in such a modern, yet original light. Not even drugs can illicit this so purely genuine emotion. Weird.
P.S. Enjoy this moment - for a cynic this is a rare
revelatory instance;-)
