Boardgame-tastic Christmas

The Hairy Brother has just departed back to the frozen north, after a Christmas of gaming goodness.

On the 23rd we went to Chance’N’Counters (boardgames café) and played Odin’s Ravens (I liked this a lot) and Gubs (which was a bit too random for my brother). At home, we played all these, which included some Christmas presents: Valeria Card Kingdoms (liked this a lot, may buy it), Lords of Scotland (really needs a summary card of all the clans and abilities), Raiders of the North Sea (would play again), Waggle Dance, Contagion, Grizzled (cooperative, will be playing this a lot more), Nantucket (neither of us liked it).  And lots and lots of Star Realms and Colony Wars.

On the RPG front, Jimbo came round and ran Achtung Cthulhu using the Cortex Plus system. No-one died and no-one went insane which must be a world record for Cthulhu. Hairy Brother and I also tried out the combat systems for various RPGs. Our results are:
  • Polaris - yes, works fine. I’d house rule that 1 to9 points of damage does a Light Wound, rather than 5 to 9 points. Mainly because I abhor systems where a success means “Nothing happens”.
  • United Earth Defence: You Are The Resistance - it’s a dice steps up/down system. I need to ask the internet what happens when your d4 is stepped down. Does it becomes zero?
  • Mutant Year Zero - also needs to ask the internet a question.  Is says very clearly on one page the only dice which are added/removed from the dice pool are Skill dice. But if you take damage, your Stats go down and logically that means your Attribute dice vanish from the pool … so is that an exception to the ‘only the skill dice’ rule?
