What I usually do is draw (or trace) the design onto interfacing, which I then put on the back of whatever is being embroidered. If you don't want the interfacing to show when you're done embroidering, use tear-away. It does just what its name promises: tears away once you're done embroidering ( ... )

Oh you're awesome! Thank you! Would never have thought of interfacing! I've done the marking things with pens / pencils approach in the past, but I just don't think they'll stay on this fabric. Grey tunic, with (to be) greys and blues knotwork / spirals to be part of a Dol Amroth-y outfit :)
