The problem with creating fanon

Mar 16, 2010 08:05

I was talking to someone about Phoenix and the fanon I've been making for him, and an issue came up that's been on my mind since almost day one. Namely, the fact that I have been playing him as having been the prince of Aeropa. There isn't very much canon to support this, other than his mannerisms, posture, form of speech, and the fact that you can see the crest of Aeropa is a phoenix.

During the conversation, it was pointed out that this bit of fanon would greatly impact anyone who might play Skyheed or Ruskin. If someone did apply for either one of them, I would have to approach them, talk to them, work out details so we're playing on the same page. There might still need to be some of that, regardless, because there is unwritten history between Phoenix and Skyheed (and possibly Ruskin), but with the prince thing, they would not be able to just come in and play without potentially tripping over my fanon.

At this point, I've been playing the prince thing subtly, not making a huge deal of it or waving it around in people's faces. Phoenix doesn't want to talk about it. It's come up ICly two, maybe three times. It could be retconned without much trouble. I'd still want to play Phoenix as noble, which seems a safe bet to make. Retconning, however, impacts more people than me, just as creating fanon impacts more people than me. If you have a thought on the matter, I would like to hear it.
