stuff to read

I've been pretty content-rific lately.

So, here's a collection of URLs:

* A fire in what is (or at least was) "the projects" for our town. Police are saying they don't know the cause, but I'd bet even money it was a meth lab.
* A poll conducted by U of CT says that 36% of HS students think the media should get government approval before running ( Read more... )

I believe two of the people I (or we) know live in that complex. Two of my friends just told me about a fire in their apartments last night. I've never heard them refer to them as "the projects," though.

They used to be called "Mountain View". I noticed that the name changed, and I supposed that might mean that they aren't "the projects" any more.

It used to be the standard place to warehouse people with section 8 housing. I don't know if that's still true, or if it's only true for some portion of the set of apartments.

Yeah, the apartment I'm living in now was a section 8 place, and hardly the projects, but I can see how a place like that got such a name.

It's not section 8 housing for everyone.

In fact, I pay my rent and I don't have section 8, housing vouchers, nothing like that. Mountain View apartments are next door.

I wouldn't consider where I live "The Projects"... that is just plain silly. There are mostly really nice families living here.

And the fire wasn't started by a "Meth Lab"... it was started on someone's patio by accident.

I was guessing a meth lab because we've been having such a huge problem with them in Abq. There was one that blew up just four or five blocks from my house (downtown) a couple of months ago. The woman had only moved in the day before.

Nah, it was a bunch of kids playing on their porch (I don't know exactly how it started though)
