I think it's a really good idea. I think that women get this message from the media and from, I suppose you could say 'the world' in general' that they must look like the ultra thin, photoshopped images you often see in magazines (and elsewhere), and so they often tend to get a bad image of themselves. I think this is most strong with young girls, who are so impressionable. This type of almost unattainable perfectionism is a very real cause for many eating disorders (though there are many other reasons, including control, that people have eating disorders).
The way that the media portrays woman (and men too, let's not forget them, because they are effected) has a huge impact on people. So, if we see more people portrayed in a more 'normal' and sometimes more healthy way, I think that we may see an eventual increase of people who are a little happier with themselves, because they'll realize that it really isn't all that normal to have a BMI of say... 10 (for women this is horribly and unhealthily low!). I think that a lot of people

There is one thing with this picture and a bit “oversize” pretty lady. She is (like most “big” girls in America, and I guess she is American?) not overweight in her face and neck. Nor her (upper)hands are oversize. The person who may weight same, but have thick neck and round face with big double chin wouldn’t look as near as pretty as this one. Yes, this woman is pretty. She actually have a bit of tummy (and that mostly because the way she is sitting) and oversize, well, be honest - fat legs. But if she successfully covers her legs… I guess she wouldn’t look “fat” at all. There you are. This is another manipulation. One of many on this subject. Punktum!
In all fairness she is a plus sized model I believe somewhere between a size 12-14 I believe the article said and being a model there are aesthetic requirements and proportional balances. Being a model she would be taller than say the average because cameras simply prefer that. Just as they do put on 10 pound to the average frame. Not sure what you were getting at in this instance. I am thinking that she might have had a child based on the stomach which is somewhat disproportionate to the general firmness of her body. Still think she looks healthy. Again what is your point, Sexy

I think she looks wonderful. I have never understood why the 4% body type represented the lot of us when clearly most do not look like skinny models. I think this is a great step in right direction for people to accept others as they are.
It began rather innocently actually, the perception of ideal beauty. Remember back in the day when what was lovingly termed rubinesque (zaftig) women were all the rage and in some societies to this day it meant wealth - the ability to feed her curves. Cultural disparaties aside that changed in the early part of this century with the coming of fashion and the slow development of fashion post 50% when we suddenly realized smoking was bad for you and disproportionate fat can and does kill you. Being human we always go the other extreme. Models are thin because they are hangers. Their bodies are irrelevant and must not be the focal point but what they are wearing - Twiggy began this trend and we have been in it ever since.
The 4% is not the average american of any variety. Just walk down any american street and this is soon confirmed.
I agree, somewhere in the middle is right neither extreme is healthy.
She looks more out of shape (no muscles), really. But, then - looks can and do, deceive.
When I was at my top-form (no fat, only muscles - ppl thought I was a PRETTY boy) I had 70 kg on my frame. Yup, and I had no boobs. That fat-less. I have boy-hips and a broad V-shaped back; today, with some extra kilos, I look like a handsome woman, but...
...as I said; looks do deceive. Give those kilos to your random female, that never been working out, etc, and it will look, er, like the model on display.
Btw: she is pretty, I'm NOT saying she's either fat OR uggly. Just out of shape.
I'm a firm believer of keeping your muscles in shape. A woman can have a LOT of extra kilos on her body and still look very sexy - as long as she has muscles beneath.
/work-out-happy-Graw that nowadays even have boobs
Why thank you... remind me next time of NOT speaking of boobs with you, yes? *snickers* All my friends tease me about me either getting annoyed with these... things... OR wanting them to get BIGGER.
Okay if it makes you happy do note I am not boobed myself and have no issue with that whatsoever. 34B is my bag and I love it. Wanna know why...fair or not, you get great shit at lingere shops because of that and you dont have to pay a fortune. I like mine just fine. Again that goes right back to being comfy in your own skin.
The scarecrow sticks-and-bones women in magazines scare me, but not in a good "here is a trip to the carnival funhouse" way. They are symbols, epitomizing the gaunt deprivation polarity, the Lent to Mardis Gras, the season of plague and empty larders to the Festival of Fools. When I see bony women elevated to positions of worship, I recall how the Victorians worshipped women (and boys) who were sickly and frail, invalids lying on their deathbeds: Beth in Little Women, Nell in The Olde Curiosity Shoppe, Tiny Tim. What it is we hate in ourselves that starvation becomes beautiful. What are we starving in ourselves? What needs to be fed

Models are held out as our ideals, and the selection of those models is based on what we collectively desire. Marketing agencies wouldn't choose the painted skeletal child-woman if she didn't sell their clients' clothing, perfume, jewels, and luxuries.
Beautifully put. It is the collectives overall wish. Advertising/Marketing could give a shit ultimately whatever the reigning aesthetic is with the collective so long as it sells. When something ceases to sell they move on to the next ...pretty shiny. All of this runs in cycles as you know. We as humans never ever do anything by halves.
My favourite example of this is the Aunt Jemima Model - girlfriend got thin right quick when the focus group did not like her look. Same thing for one of the movie studio logs (Grecian Goddess Type) who waifed down right quick somewhere in the late 80's.
Strange how we like to elevate the reprimands to our existence.
Why is it that our inner ideal is so insubstantial, passive and like a child? 'She' is someone who is given to rather than who gives (starving), someone who is acted upon rather than acts (karma/consequence-free, not self-responsible), someone who stands or walks mute and without talent or opinion or story as the jewel box of other people's accomplishments?
'We' hate being chained to the earth. 'We' want to be borne up away from our cares by a soft, warm wind. We want to consume rather than produce.
Re jewel analogy etc. I dont believe it initially starts that way but it has evolved to be such. She was only meant, and this applies for male models even more so as a hanger. She/he is not relevant. The items worn are.
The more bland the exterior, the more likely the inner eye will focus on the product sold. It is a huge joke that eventually all that does turn around and becomes the ideal since it is associated with the success and the ability to garner said. Very interesting how the human mind works.
