I've re-watched the original Star Wars trilogy over the past couple days, and I think now I'm finally old enough to understand and appreciate them. Like any little kid, of course I loved SW, and wanted to be a Jedi Knight and Rebel fighter (and depending on my mood, a Sith), but didn't "get" the SW universe like I do now.
The dialogue isn't nearly as atrocious as that of the prequel Star Wars movies. The acting is better too. I don't know what was up with George Lucas and the prequels, did he tell the actors to be as wooden and lifeless as possible?
It's strange that the droids always tend to show more emotion than the humanoid characters. And Darth Vader's mask is a better actor than Hayden as Anakin (I don't blame Hayden, I blame the bad dialogue and direction).
Hayden-Anakin was edited into the ending of the RotJ version I have, replacing the old Anakin Force-ghost. It made me hee out loud. I had no idea that was added. A very good addition, in my opinion.
As with the Padawan Anakin/Master Obi-Wan and Anakin/Padme relationships, I think Han also had more chemistry with the main male character, Luke, than he did with his supposed love interest, Leia. (I never even really paid attention to the lovey stuff as a kid, obviously.) That's not just the slash fan in me talking. I found Han's friendship with Luke more believable than his relationship with Leia. And Han and Chewy were totally doing it. I love Chewy. I always wanted to be him (but as a Jedi Knight Wookiee!) and talk Wookiee growl.
I don't understand why people hate the Ewok song at the end. It's not unbearable. And Ewoks are really cute.
When Luke first shows up as a new Jedi Knight, all in black and taking his badassery straight to Jabba, I still love it. It'll never get old. It may be my favourite scene out of the three.
Alec as Obi-Wan is even more brilliant than I remember. I really, really wish his role had been bigger in the movies. Bigger as in more screen time. Just sitting around without talking for all I care, it wouldn't have to be him doing Jedi tricks and being wise. He has a strong presence that added a lot.
Yoda's voice sort of creeped me out. He sounded like a Muppet. I'd forgotten how funny he sounded. When Artoo zapped him for taking the light, I was all, "That's not nice to shock your Master!" If Obi-Wan hadn't channeled the Darkside to kill poor Maul in TPM, Maul'd so be living in the swamp with Yoda and cooking for him by then.
Speaking of TPM, I think it's still my favourite SW movie, probably because it has so many of my favourite characters featured (young Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and of course Darth Maul -- it even has a 3 second shot of Quinlan Vos in the background). And maybe because I "grew up" with it and was able to enjoy the huge hype and excitement when it was being made and when it was released, unlike the original trilogy because I wasn't even alive in the 70's.
TPM is what made me rediscover my love of SW. The other two prequel movies... I could take 'em or leave 'em I guess. They didn't really make me feel "omg omg SW is so damn cool" like TPM and the original trilogy do/did. Though, I do like Obi-Wan in all of them, and Obi-Wan facing off against Anakin-Vader was pretty heartbreaking (I was sadder when Qui-Gon died).
Oh yeah, Yoda dying made my inner Maul :(, and Obi-Wan disappearing/dying made my inner Qui-Gon ;D ('cos that means he gets to have Force-ghost sex with him). Hey, Qui-Gon should've been added to the end of RotJ too, as a Force-ghost. But I guess it wouldn't make much sense since he's never mentioned in the trilogy, and Obi-Wan only talks about how Yoda trained him... Still. To me it would've been perfect.
This icon is also brought to you by my inner Maul.

omg_lightsaber* Oh man, someone talk me out of it. I'm already on too much crack as it is! Plus I now have a wee 16-17 year old Maul, and a wee 18-19 year old Quinlan Vos over at
dawning_entropy (cool name, by the way). (And just ignore how I accidentally linked the wrong name at first.)
