i wish i knew more about quantum mechanics. i know the hell out of physics. i can tell you how shit works just by looking at it, no prob ( Read more... )

I'm really fucking visual, I totally understand where you're coming from. Oddly enough, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle never gave me a problem... I just always figured that observers made the particles act like screaming three-year-olds at Chucky Cheese. I don't think they act like, say, a thrown baseball.

On the other hand, I secretly don't believe in atoms and molecules because I can't get a good visual with context on 'em. I mean, I guess the theory works all right, we seem to be able to predict things quite nicely, but in my heart... I need my mental image. So you might want to discount my silly natterings-on.

i visualize atoms like solar systems, and that seems to fit in my head.

but that would mean that if you went to chucky cheese and visualized the kids as a thrown baseball they WOULD act like that, and totally shoot straight out windows and all. i just don't think the observer has any affect on whats being observed.

to me the whole thing is just like, "i thought it was raining today, but when i looked outside, it was actually sunny, so it must have been the act of me looking that made it sunny." they're just covering for the fact that they thought one thing, but later when they actually looked, it was different and they're blaming the observation for that. rather than just admitting that they had it wrong.

this isn't like Schrödinger's cat, which totally makes sense to me. and i actually use THAT principle every morning.

michio kaku once said don't try to visualize or wrap your head around some of the concepts in quantum mechanics, it just is what it is.

thats a cop out. kaku was probably just tired of answering questions that he didn't know the answer to. :)

I heard it back in 1993 when I was still in high school. For what it's worth he was talking about 2 things: 1) schrodingers cat and 2) imagining the time dimension being parallel to the 3 spatial dimensions. "A computer could do it, but a human couldn't. Don't try to visualize it or you'll go bananas. It is what it is."

I don't know if it's any consolation but in my limited knowledge of quantum mechanics and etc and my absolute no-knowledge of higher math, I do think I understand the concept of why heisenberg's uncertainty principle is the way it is. I don't know much about it but I'm assuming a particle's trajectory that is being measured is not fixed to a specific path.

look at you still talking when there's science to do!

totally, i'm doing science, and i'm still alive.

Between this post and your facebook status, we totally need to find you a hot but nerdy comi-con-attending quasi-goth gamer science-punk girl. I know there is one out there and she will be glad to demonstrate some quantum mechanics... IF you know what I mean.
