Character Number: 1
Name: Yenyoji Quryoja
Source: Final Fantasy XI Online
Appearance: Yenyoji is a trim and fit mithra of around 5’6”. While she's fuzzy and covered with fur all around, the hair on her head is bright carrot orange, and defies gravity in ways best achieved by sleeping at very odd angles. Despite her obvious cat’s tail, tipped at the end with that same orange-red, most of her defining animal features can be found on her head: two pointy cat ears covered with with darker brown ends, stripes running down her cheeks and under her jaw, a fuzzy nose and slitted pupils against bright green irises. Her whole body is covered with smooth but coarse fur, except where it no longer grows thanks to scars from previous combat encounters. Two such scars are visible on her face, one running across her nose and the other down across her eyebrow and cheekbone, narrowly missing injuring her eye. She’s not particularly beautiful or feminine in her natural appearance, but she makes up for it with energy. Everything she wears is made special to assist with her magic: the full
Black Mage uniform,
Ice Staff, and various trinkets and bits of jewelry were all woven and forged with enchantments to boost her magic spells.
Personality: Yenyoji is a black mage, not just by profession, but by lifestyle. She has studied black magic ever since she was an enthusiastically romping little cub in the Kingdom of San d’Oria, and indeed, magic is as much a normal part of her as one's little finger. Not uncommon for black mages, she is a little... overeager to fling spells at the slightest excuse. Listening to the elements for so long has left her with somewhat of a loose grip on reality, though she refrains from harming others in favor of recklessly facing dangerous monsters and situations. She is fiercely protective of her few but beloved friends, but also the occasional cause of the danger threatening them in the first place: Yen is the sort who would throw rocks at a bee’s nest purely to see if it is still occupied. But she’s quick to point that she hasn’t yet gotten anyone killed with her antics, so she often just shrugs things off and points out how enjoyable the situation was overall. She’s an adrenaline junkie through and through, and very good at ignoring pain. Don’t take that for excessive toughness or stamina, though, because though she goes down like a sack of potatoes like anyone when wounded the right way. Despite her endless enthusiasm for danger, she can be reminded to exercise restraint, especially if you offer the promise of treasure or baubles instead. But often that reminder needs to be reinforced, or suddenly hey look it’s a dragon I wonder if I can pick a scale off its knee.
When she isn’t charging head-first into dangerous situations, she is happy to roam the countryside in search of the next completely awesome and often equally-dangerous adventure. Nomadic by nature and a bit of a loner, she prefers to avoid large crowds, never having properly mastered the art of socializing. It is not as though she hates people, so much as she has no idea how to handle herself around them. Her overt enthusiasm and lack of proper manners to go with them can be rather off-putting if she doesn't reinforce her personal brain-to-mouth filter, especially since she can come off as rude or flippant despite her best intentions. So she tends to try and think things through before following through with them, and sometimes gets so caught up that she forgot to actually vocalize what it is she decided to do. The end result often being that she’ll do something strange that makes perfect sense to her, but little to anyone else. But if there are no decisions to be made, and she's attempting to keep company in a friendly and laid-back setting, she'll often try to distract herself rather than insert herself into the conversation. Unless, of course, it turns to something she's familiar with. Good luck shutting her up, then.
On the rare occasions that Yenyoji is around people she’s fully comfortable with, she becomes quite playful and energetic, and tries to include others in what’s going on in her head. However, her playfulness is far more like a lion cub’s than a house kitten’s. She often resorts to off-color jests and comments, or occasionally just flat-out teases others. She means no real harm, but figures that getting a rise out of people is good for them now and then. It keeps them on their toes and on alert. Still, Yen is painfully aware some of her tendencies could come off as being sociopathic or psychotic. And sometimes she fears that she is, given how she’s so drawn to natural disasters, and would spend her time watching fire burn, or a flash flood tearing down a forest.
While she thinks these are beautiful acts of nature, Yenyoji is not the kind who would stand back and let someone die just to watch it happen. While she knows the natural conclusion of life is death, that doesn’t make death any more pleasant or tolerable. She would not hesitate to try and quell a fire or a flood long enough to save someone’s life, even at risk to herself. That lucky survivor would then be forced to endure the bragging afterward. She would cajole them into treating her to dinner(s) and possibly some shiny new magical trinket, depending on how rich they were. Failure, on the other hand, is not something she would handle well at all.
History: Yenyoji was one of the lucky ones who was not orphaned by the war. Like many of her kind, she only knew her mother, for mithra men are rare and marriage is even rarer. But her mother came from the homeland to start a new life, though her idea of a new life was “new pockets to pick.” She tried to raise little Yen to follow in mother’s footsteps, but the little cub heard the calling of the elements and yearned for the path of magery instead. While magic isn’t a taboo, parents do get so caught up in what they want their kids to be, and thus Yen was left to try and experiment with magic without a teacher or mentor’s guidance. Self-taught as she was, she knew that in order to truly obtain the title of “Black Mage,” she would have to leave home and journey to the school of magic in Windurst. Assuming her mother would disapprove, she left in the dead of night.
Life in Windurst was comfortable, even though Yenyoji only managed to fulfill her most basic needs. She slept outside, for Windurst is a land of mild and warm weather, and ate what she could find or occasionally snatch from careless bazaars. Within a few years, she returned to San d’Oria as a full-fledged black mage and enlisted herself to assist with matters of the protection of the city. This quickly became a huge bore as it was clear they were only going to send her on errands and reward her with petty cash. That might be good for your standard city dweller, but she’d been bitten bad by the adventuring bug in her time away. Though she kept San d’Oria as her base of operations, she struck out into the world, this time not knowing her true destination at all.
She grew stronger as she traveled across beaches, mountains, and deserts, and through forests, caves, and jungles. Yenyoji willingly offered her magical abilities to other adventurers she encountered on her travels, taking great joy in gleefully mowing down any monsters that stood in their way. However, she made few lasting connections, preferring not to be weighted down by companions with their own quirks and annoying habits. This situation eventually changed, however, when she met a brother and sister pair who could keep up with her and proved their company worthwhile and, most shockingly, pleasant. From Cidriel she learned how to cook, and from Arkh, she enjoyed the fine art of music, but never quite got the hang of it, herself.
The trio soon grew into a Linkshell, full of allies and adventuring companions and friends. Their adventures have been many and have certainly left them with endless tales to tell, ranging from infiltrating beastmen cities to fighting absurdly powerful crabs inside a giant tree. They've sought treasure in ruined citadels and faced a multitude of dangers hidden within the arctic territories of the Kindred. And together with a small army of adventurers, they've entered the alternate realm of Dynamis to recover fallen cities, and faced the Emptiness of Promyvion to uncover its secrets.
All in all, Yen would have to say that making these friends has been one of the better things to happen to her, but she still isn't sure how or when it happened.
Specific Abilities:
Black Mage spell list. She has everything up to and including Burst II. The strongest of her spells cannot be cast one after the other without severely exhausting her. She also has the ability Elemental Seal, which increases the accuracy of the next spell she casts, and Manafont, which allows her to cast without growing tired for a limited period of time. However, these cannot be used freely and also have a "cooldown" period of sorts before she can use them again.
Additional Information: Yen can cook, but to everyone’s relief, she leaves magic out of her curries and mithkabobs. Fish is her favorite food in the whole world and will choose that over everything else, but she doesn't mind cooking for others. She doesn't carry the bigotry some of the more devout hold against beastmen and can get along with pretty much anyone. In the way same she usually tries to get along with others, anyway.
Sample Journal Post:
[There’s the sound of a lot of fiddling with the device by careless hands that have never had any experience with handling electronics, and finally a voice mutters to itself in a gentle drawl.] It doesn’t look like any relic I’ve ever seen before... Ohhh, runes!
[And the voice falls silent as she submits a rather plain text post.] A B C D E hello
[And then she hits the video function, allowing everyone to see that a woman with distinctly feline features is responsible for the disturbance.] What a strange device. I wonder if I can sell it.
Now, where did I end up... [She looks up and around herself, curiously.]

Yenyoji gazed into the woods, with no small amount of yearning betrayed on her face. Staying in one place was incredibly, unspeakably dull. Her usual distractions had worn thin: cooking, lighting individual blades of grass on fire, sitting outside to listen to the wind, polishing her staff (and making crude jokes about doing so), and basically every little tiny game she could think of was no longer interesting. But previous attempts to leave proved fruitless for everyone who dared try, and Cid was being very strict on the matter of making sure Yen behaved. But even so, Yen wasn’t completely stupid. She can’t just go running out there willy-nilly, no matter how much her wanderlust begs to just go see; maybe this time it will be different...
In fact, she’d taken about five steps away from the house before she caught herself doing so. Grumbling and stomping the ground in frustration, the mithra doubled back, sat herself down and went back to carefully scraping dirt out of the gold finish holding the elemental gem. Her eyes darted toward the forest occasionally, as if hearing noises, but she redoubled her cleaning efforts every time, becoming more and more furious with her scrubbing.
Maybe the fae would find something interesting to do soon. Yen could only hope.
