When I'm genuinely sick, I don't feel an ounce of guilt. If anything, it's time to feel entitlement to do what's needed to get better. When I was younger I used to feel like I was guilty for infecting people and taking time off, etc., but I found that nobody else extended me the same courtesy when they were sick, and that I was expendable and things can wait or always be done in my absence. So now? When I'm sick, I don't give a damn. I take the time to rest, medicate myself, and reduce my symptoms, or let them play out, if needed. If I'm put in a tough position where I might be out of sick time, or am threatened by an idiot in a position of authority, I go in and put everyone at risk and fail at productivity so badly that it becomes obvious there should have been a better solution.
