Why is everyone friends only these days? I'm just curious as to whether people are hiding from strangers or people in particular, or just paranoid about strangers reading them. Personally, I miss when I first got livejournal and most people I knew mainly did public updates, it was all a lot more open and less exclusive. It makes me wonder if I ( Read more... )

With the friends-only thing, I think it depends on the person. For instance, I went friends only because my old youth theatre director once, while googling the name of our then-play, fell across my Livejournal: the place where I talk about slash, and personal concerns, and things I just didn't want him seeing. I'd been worrying, in that particular post, that I was somehow ill-equipped to perform the role I'd been cast in, and the ~conversation~ we had to have about it was excruciating. I'm not frightened of strangers getting a look in my head - I'm frightened of people-I-know-but-don't-really-Know getting one. I'm naturally a relatively private person, I don't even really discuss an inordinate amount of personal things on my LJ, but that whole episode gave me the fear last time.

(Also, my dad's pretty net-savvy, and I live in fear of him seeing enough of my LJ to work out that I write fanfiction. I would NEVER LIVE IT DOWN.)

Well, personally, I've had bad experiences of people I know in real life snooping on my online trail and talking about my entries with me in person. I express myself best in writing, and they all just have to bring up the more sensitive topics I write about like it's normal to talk about it so casually. I'm an open person who is willing to talk about anything if people ask me nicely and with genuine interest, but I'm also pretty private, if that makes sense ( ... )

I'm FO due to my parents snooping through my online activity many years ago. Since then I have obviously grown up, and spend more of my time in my Uni town than at home anyway, but I've just got into the habit of making everything FO.

And I will miss you if you leave the world of the internetz! :(

I lock my entries because in the good old days my then-boyfriend looked at it and discovered the entires in which I talked about liking another person. Who was female haha, and this was when I was less certain about my sexuality and whatnot so that was god awful, and upsetting and I'm fairly certain contributed to use breaking up. / life-story. So yeah, I friends-lock for that reason, and in case anyone I know finds it and discovers what a huge geek I am, haha, though a few of my Rl friends are also on lj, but they already know of my geekery.
