It's more along the lines of realising that your soulmate is someone that you know won't ever feel the same for you.

Exactly. I mean, one can drive themselves insane with the thought of being faithful to a memory, of trying to feel something for a thing that no longer exists. Sometimes the only way out is a good dose of selfish hedonism.
