Top Decadey Things, Part One: Movies

Jan 05, 2010 18:11

I don't like to number things, because that implies that some are better than others, but they may just be different. So, without much further adieu, here are some of the best movies of the past decade:

  • Le Fabuleux Déstin d'Amélie Poulain, ("Amélie"), Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001
  • District 9, Neill Blomkamp, 2009
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Peter ( Read more... )

decade, lists, movies, best of, 2000s

"... and it development as an art form distinct from that of novels and plays."

Of the 18 movies on your list, only 9 were not based on novels, and only 8 not based on other media (comic books). Film as of late has hardly been distinct from other media. While all of these films are good, most of them are just great examples of how good books can be good movies.

I'm also surprised you included UP but not Wall-E which, in my opinion, was much more distinct and interesting. While neither is really a plot that hasn't been seen before, Wall-E struck me as much more unique and entertaining in its presentation of its plot. UP, while fun and whimsical, didn't push any boundaries. It was completely safe. Which is okay, but Wall-E did more for film than UP did.

The Hurt Locker, if you haven't seen it, is just as harrowing as Children of Men, though not quite as well filmed (just because of that one 5 minute-long shot... Everything else is equally fantastic).

So, if you want to tense your whole body for 2 hours, that's a good watch that's not on the list.

Also: In Bruges isn't on your list, and that's just glorious film making.

And if 2000 counts, and we're obviously not caring about derivative works, then... Memento.
Really? The Prestige is up there, and Memento isn't? The play with storytelling is just fantastic, whereas The Prestige is just "Look, it's Hugh Jackman drowning in a box". Eugh. (though I do have to give points for David Bowie-Nikola Tesla).

Your list is weird.

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, but I'll dutifully add it to the Netflix queue.

As for Memento, I had just completely forgotten about it. I retroactively add it. (The Prestige is on there because of the great structural mirroring.)

I guess this means I'm a Christopher Nolan fan?
