This month's experiment of eliminating corn syrup/high fructose corn syrup/ is going okay so far. I stared it with the goal of eating less candy and drinking less pop, so that's working (though I need to buy some more Perrier - I'm out! and I do drink diet instead [I don't want lectures on aspartame or whatever, thank you. For your summer reading you should invest in a How-To book on home gardening for beginners.

I remember seeing some well-photographed & described Guides in Indigo last fall when I was in there with a friend. One in particular seemed good. Let me check.

Oh! This is it: http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/new-illustrated-guide-to-gardening/9780888506818-item.html

Thanks! I still haven't gotten a library card, so that'll be on the to do reading list when I've finally gotten one!

Damn it. I wish I thought of it sooner. My mom got some tomato plants for the garden and wound up with *6* extra ones (they fruit far too much for us too consume) in a mix of big ones and cherry tomatos. She spent all of May trying to find people to give them away to and had a hell of a hard time managing. Next time we have extra veggie plants, I should just give them to you...

That's too bad! I'd have been happy to them them off her hands. Next time, gadget! :D

Starting a garden is definitely intimidating, and I just started this year- there's a lot I'd do differently.

Growing tomatoes and peppers in buckets is an easy way to start though- and it's not too late to start lettuce and kale (which you can also grow in buckets) since they like cooler weather and grow quickly.

The advantage of living in Ontario is a much longer growing season than the prairies; you can still get some leaf vegetables in, though. Root ones might be a little late by now. For next year, if you start from seeds instead of buying established plants, you'll want to get those going by like February so they're mature enough to be replanted by spring when the ground is ready.

Glad things seem to be going well with you!

I went with this one: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/09/buffalo-wing-soup-crockpot-recipe.html except I used a jack cheese instead of Velveeta. Because why fake cheese?
argh128 ate it with tortilla chips out of the bowl, more as a dip than a soup. I ate it as soup. It's delicious.

I altered this one: http://www.cookstr.com/recipes/braised-pork-chops-with-turnips-and-apples so that I cooked it on the stovetop -but I imagine it would be great in the crock too.

Is it essential that the chicken be cooked first before putting in the crock (first recipe)? Just curious (I'm lazy that way, haha). We usually have most of that stuff in the house, so should be good. Maybe this weekend for game night it can be dinner. So many chicken thighs left to use up (so I guess I'll fry those first). Would just have to clear the cheese with the person with allergies (she can't have soft cheeses, and I don't know where jack falls on that scale).

Personally, I love velveeta. So creamy saucy! I know it's fake cheese, but it melts so nicely...
