MTV is a propaganda arm for 'popular culture' and the RIAA, designed to brainwash kids into listening to/buying The Latest Thing. Then again, most TV is that way, and it's damned rare to find something otherwise. Typically, the farther you get from the mainstream channels, the better quality the television.

I think MTV panders to popular culture, while VH1 observes it. MTV says "here's some new crap to consume and use to define yourself". VH1 says "here's the crap you've been consuming and using to define yourself."

Also, VH1 has a lower profile, so it won't get the same complaints about two mostly naked people getting it on.
