DVD player/recorder

So our DVD recorder is slowly dying. It plays fewer and fewer disks. What do people recommend? Is there a decent my-freeview type recorder out there (we don't have sky and don't anticipate getting it). What do you have and do you like it?

We have an LG DVD recorder you could have, since we gave up on television a while back and have suffered no ill effects. Unfortunately, it's LG, which means it's crap. And there's the vexed issue of getting stuff to you from Australia; if certain people are to be believed, that's incredibly expensive and a logistical nightmare to organise, and must be discussed ad nauseam by dozens of irrelevant people before any decision can be made...

We've decided to go out and buy a cheapish DVD player for now to tide us over until we can afford something decent (which we still need to decide on).
