maki vs. inari

Apr 25, 2006 12:15

today was Japanese culture today in class! yatta! it totally made my week. some of the girls in class modelled traditional kimono, then we all got to try our hand at making maki sushi (the most well-known kind, seaweed rolled). yamagishi-sensee brought inari (rice wrapped in fried tofu) that was pre-made and we got to try that too. then we watched ( Read more... )

well, actually... thierrys April 26 2006, 02:20:15 UTC
just kidding about the title. we watched some wedding videos in my gender studies class and the bride actually changed into a ball gown, like, prom-style. and apparently, wearing a kimono and obi properly, the obi functions essentially like a corset, making it difficult to sit, eat, breathe, etc. blech. inari (named after the fox/god Inari, who supposedly likes those things quite well) is actually pretty good, but it's better warm and eaten on top of soup. hence my early meals consisted of inaridon (with udon) and kitsune soba (with soba). kitsune=fox, you know. i think they're also called kitsune age, but i could be wrong.

yay for turning 21! let's drink a bottle of wine together when i return.

i knew the word inari sounded familiar! i'm not surprised that they wear ball-gowns more now. the kimono are more traditional. yamagishi-sensee showed us her wedding pictures, and she was v. traditional. also, her husband and children randomly appeared in class! her kids are just...ugh, i wanted to gobble them whole. her three year old daughter had the largest, blackest, more serious eyes i have ever seen.

wine, w00t!

when DO you get back. baka! you forgot to tell me in your last email. also, what about that latin translation!

how about: in memoria vivat aeterno? (the "forever" bit is tricky, i'd say aeterno or semper, i think aeterno sounds better and i think the connotation is better? i'm not really sure. maybe check it with dr. herzman?
