Dave and I went with Crew 71 to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. First of all we were in a caravan of five cars. On the country roads it was fine but on the interstate it was a different matter. These RenFaires were never meant to be historical. There probably aren't any historically accurate Ren Faires in the US since there wasn't any frooey Ren culture in the US back then. But we're really good at roughing it colonial style!
At least for casual visitors, modern RenFaire is all about shopping, hanks of roasted turkey, and some really bad theatre. Maybe it's different if you work there and hang with the costumed people...The theatre used to be much more risque until the families showed up. I was told that in Texas, some of the wenches still go topless.
I went for the shopping because I like those kinds of baubles. And I love the architecture of all the little buildings where the shops are.

The baubles were nice but too expensive for my pocketbook. If I had a lot of mad money to throw away it might have been worth it.

It looks very colorful...probably more in line with what I was expecting.
Maybe I'll give it one more try sometime when I'm feeling good and I can get there via routes and means that are less stressful! ;)

Or you could bypass the thing altogether by going to the Ren Faire website, finding the list of vendors, and googling for the vendors' websites to shop.
