New DW companion robbed from a cradle

The actor in case is 28, which is usually a good age for finally breaking out into big 'celebritiness' for non-teenager-focused shows and movies. Unfortunately, I'm cranky his big debut is going to be Doctor Who, who has always had mass appeal to the elderly as well as the young. Hiring ( Read more... )

I don't remember her (like Freema's Adeola, she had a small part), but this looks like as good an excuse to rewatch Fires of Pompeii as any.

I was thinking about how young she seems, but Billie Piper was only a year or two older when she started as Rose. And despite the complaints at the time about stunt casting (I assume you know about her past as a British teen pop star?), she turned out very well.

I just hope that the character they come up with for the new companion doesn't come from modern-day London for a change. Lots of the old school companions didn't.

And yeah, I'd love to see Sally Sparrow again. She was great.

Ah, but teen pop stars have experience acting. Usually bad acting, but they're already known quantities- Piper had been *famous* for years (even if it frequently was for gossipy-type things and not her talent). Baby Spice over there is a complete newcomer. (That doesn't necessarily mean she's a bad actress, that just means I'm going to whine about her learning how to act and be famous at the same time, rather than growing up the BBC equilvalent of a Disney kid and slowing gathering famousness.)
