Indeed war is not a black and white issue. And you're right that we don't give due credit to those who lay down their lives for a cause. I offer an answer as to why:
Politics. World War Two was centred around a worthy cause that many people were ready to rally behind. Vietnam and the two Persian Gulf Wars didn't have such worthy causes. The preceeding wars were clouded in politics and vested Western interests (not to say that such interests weren't apart of WW2, but perhaps they were more hidden...). Truly it is a shame when people would rather debate politics than support those who die in the name of their native country, but such is the current state of affairs.
