ladies are rad! too bad that they are just women.

today i watched the first two episodes of hunter, a jdrama about four ladies who become bounty hunters. i also watched the first episode of nazotoki wa dinner no ato de.

things i love, a short list:
→ ladies being rad and taking names, detecting!
→ ladies looking out for each other!
→ ladies being besties ♥
→ ladies solving crimes!
→ when ladies - well, people in general, really - are competent and can take care of themselves! you know, with some wiggle room, everyone needs help, guys, okay.
→ when ladies are actually treated like they are grown ups!

guess which of these appear in hunter and which appear in nazotoki wa dinner no ato de! if you guessed "hunter has them all! nazotoki has none!" then you would be SADLY CORRECT. XD

dammit sho, i've been saying for ages that this role will be perfect for you, but look, now i can't even put you on a short list of things i love, because i am thinking about you in nazotoki and not about actual-you. XD

things i don't like, a short list, SPOILERS:
→ when ladies need a man to be protecting them at all times, for their own good, especially one protecting ~~~from the shadows, like a sparklepire or batman or the most dedicated and subtle photobomber
→ when a dude who is a pompous ass is the guy in charge and also shown respect, presumably just for being a ~man and ~in charge and ~having lots of money
→ when it is a man's fault that his girlfriend killed someone, because he cheated on her!!! because cheating on someone is definitely grounds for murder, guys - she definitely shouldn't have just asked him or broken up with him or whatever.
→ the other woman was lower class, that made it totally unacceptable for her to be the other woman!! if only she had been classier, she might not have been killed!
→ i'm pretty sure i don't like the implication that growing up innocent - which in this case means making a dude apologize to his girlfriend who just killed his other woman, or possibly it means not being able to do your job without your butler pointing out all of the "obvious" evidence, or maybe it just means "rich enough to never have hung up your own laundry or had to go a day without a sandwich" - is somehow a charming ideal, but i'm only a woman! perhaps i'm just too emotional to handle this, maybe i need a man to figure out what's going on!

guess which of these happened in hunter and which - okay, you got me. they all happened in nazotoki! yesssss. wait.

sooo yeah. i was expecting a slyly sarcastic butler and a foolish aristocrat; i wasn't expecting how awful that close-up of sho's face going "you're a fool" would be. and even though reiko's still better than her pompous boss - a character i knew on sight i would have to ignore to get through the episode - i didn't realize the show would so heavily slant in the, "but she just doesn't have the brainpower to put the clues together~" direction. (you know who has the brainpower? HER STALKER BUTLER~ thank goodness there was a man there who could protect her from her job and then do it for her.) i really hate it when people can't do their jobs, you guys. XD

AAAAGH. dammit! i really wanted to like this! XD

so, well. yeah. TL;DR: i will be continuing joyfully with hunter, and will watch more nazotoki only if someone tells me outright that there are scenes of sho getting beaten up, or if reiko solves a crime by herself. ooor i don't know, if the ladies from hunter swoop in and are like, "you can be more than this! we solve crimes just with our wits and iphones and the power of BEING BOUNTY HUNTERS!!" XD so give me the heads up if those happen and i will be delighted to try nazotoki again. but seriously, watch hunter, it's great. :D
