After nearly three years of variously working in miserable corporate conditions, being laid off from miserable corporate conditions, and then working for MORE miserable corporations, I just don't understand it

I totally agree. The summers I spent in college working in commercial labs (i.e. not doing research, just doing mindless samples) drove me crazy. And I never had anything to talk about with the people either. No kids for me, thanks, and I don't need to spend an entire lunch hour discussing the different options for re-paving the patio next spring

Seriously! I know I'm not going to be curing cancer or anything. I just couldn't believe that my boss was actually sitting there saying that, just because she makes a bunch of money, there was no value in doing anything else. Hmm, what's more important? Fleecing non-profits or trying to cure AIDS? I think that people say there's no future in education just because they can't imagine being passionate enough about something to dedicate that much effort.
The Story of the Crab Bucketsimon_draskovicApril 4 2009, 23:25:48 UTC
One time a man was walking along the beach and saw another man fishing in the surf with a bait bucket beside him. As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and had live crabs inside.
"Why don't you cover your bait bucket so the crabs won't escape?", he said.
"You don't understand.", the man replied, "If there is one crab in the bucket it would surely crawl out very quickly. However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them."
