I've made a list of all the comic book films I've seen. It amounts to about 24 movies, depending on whether you count Tintin as a "comic book film".
So here's what I've come up with so far, in alphabetical order:
Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Batman and Robin
Batman Begins
Batman Forever
Blade
Blade II
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Crow
The Dark Knight
Fantastic Four (2005)
Green Lantern
Hulk (2003)
Man of Steel
Mask of Zorro
The Phantom
Sin City
Superman (1978)
Superman II
Tintin
V for Vendetta
X-Men (2000)
X2
X-Men: The Last Stand
Putting this list together made me realise just how much I like the movies everyone else hates. I don't believe in ever looking down on the things you like, no matter what others might think.
For example, I thought Green Lantern was great fun, but then, I'm not a Green Lantern comics fan.
I disliked The Dark Knight, because it tried too hard to be serious. As far as I'm concerned, superheroes should never be taken too seriously.
I still think Batman Forever is a fantastic movie for thirteen year-olds, and I still enjoy watching it, because I like fiction aimed at teenagers and young adults.
I'm not a huge fan of Avengers or Superman, although they're okay movies, but I'm willing to admit that it might just be those characters that do nothing for me.
So clearly I like camp and cheese, and lots of it. Given I have watched the old Phantom (1943) and Batman (1966) TV shows, that should be obvious.
Not that I completely disagree with popular opinion though. I like the first X-Men movie a lot, and Hulk (2003) is completely forgettable, like most people agree.
But whatever. I like what I like. It's entertainment. Whatever I find entertaining, it does its job.
This has all been prompted by discussion over the upcoming Batman V Superman, which I still don't know what to make of. My favourite live-action Batman film has been Batman Begins, in great part because I like the villains Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul (meanwhile, I think the Joker needs to take a long walk off a short pier). But I get the impression that Batman Begins is not most people's preference.
So I'm sure I'll see Batman V Superman eventually, but I can't predict what I'm going to think of it. I kinda like the trailers, and some of the rumours sound promising, but that's no certainty I'll like the end product. Maybe I'll just remain torn.
We shall see.
