I had the urge to write some Beat/Yoyo last night, and after being reassured that people would not pelt me with stones actually read it I decided to write it :D
Title: Thicker than a rock
Author: Elfinears
Rating: Pg, Pg-13
Summary: Beat is just a little unobservant when it comes to Yoyo.
Disclaimer: Sadly I do not own any of these characters
Yoyo tentatively poked the fish with a fork, frowning slightly.
“Is it supposed to be that color?” he called over his shoulder to Beat, who merely shrugged.
“You’re the cook,” he mumbled. Yoyo’s frown only deepened at Beat’s lack of help and he went back to his fish. After a few minutes of watching Yoyo poke the fish, Beat walked over to him with a sigh.
“Here,” he said, coming up from behind Yoyo to retrieve the fish from the pan, pressing himself up against the other boy as he did so. “It’s ready,” he said as he set it on a plate and walked back to the table. After a moment he noticed that Yoyo was standing, still as stone, at the stove.
“You ok there?” he asked before placing a bit of the fish in his mouth. Yoyo remained standing for a moment before joining Beat at the table.
“Just turning off the stove,” he giggled nervously before adding, “guess I kind of spaced, huh?” Beat looked at his friend closer as he slowly chewed his fish. There was something wrong with Yoyo. It was easy to tell he was lying, which was weird in and of itself because usually Yoyo could lie without a hitch, and, was he blushing? He was acting like, like… Beat racked his brain in an attempt to remember who he was acting like. Ryth! He was acting like Ryth when she’d first met Beat, giggle and all. Beat made a mental note to keep Ryth as far away as possible from Yoyo, before his friend dyed his hair blue and started wearing a dress. With that problem settled, Beat picked up a piece of fish and popped it in his mouth.
He was too lost in his own thoughts to notice the way Yoyo was staring at his lips. Yep, that had to be it: Yoyo was just hanging out with Ryth too much.
The next evening Yoyo, Beat, Gum, and Corn were all hanging out at 99th street, relaxing after a long day of skating.
“The sky looks beautiful tonight,” Gum commented, staring at the swirl of pink and yellow around the setting sun.
“Yeah,” Beat said softly as he let his head fall onto Yoyo’s lap. Gum stifled a giggle at Yoyo’s expression and went back to watching the sunset. Corn cocked an eyebrow at the pair, but said nothing. After a moment where she tried to stop from laughing, Gum looked at Corn and motioned in the direction of their friends. With a sigh, Corn rose and pulled Beat up.
“Don’t forget to bring us back something,” Gum called after them.
“Come on, let’s go get something to eat.” He said as he skated away with Beat in tow.
“So,” Gum started once the two were out of hearing range, “you like Beat, huh?”
“What? No, of course not, I mean,” Yoyo spluttered but stopped when he saw the look Gum was giving him.
“Is it that obvious?” he asked after a moment.
“Is it obvious that birds fly?” she teased, giggling when Yoyo blushed.
“Does everyone know?” he asked her, still blushing.
“Everyone except Beat,” she answered, “but that’s only because he’s thick as a rock.”
“He is not,” Yoyo shot back.
“You’ve been following him around like a puppy for the past week. Face it,” she said, “he’s thicker than a rock.”
“Then how am I supposed to get him to notice me?” Yoyo asked, resting his head on his knees.
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” Gum said with a smile, “Corn’s taking care of it.”
“What?!”
Corn and Beat were sitting outside a restaurant, trying to decide what to eat before entering.
“What do you think about chicken?” Beat asked.
“Beat, we need to talk,” Corn said, turning to his friend.
“’Bout what?” Beat asked, confused at Corn’s solemn words.
“How do I say this,” Corn muttered, “ah, ok.” Corn cleared his throat before continuing. “Yoyo wants to do you senseless.” Beat was quiet for a moment, staring at his friend in shock.
“What?” he finally asked.
“I said, Yoyo wants to,” Corn started, before Beat interrupted him.
“No, I heard that. What I’m asking is what the hell do you mean by that?” Beat asked. “I mean, where did you get that idea.”
“Haven’t you noticed the way he’s been following you around lately?” Beat just shook his head.
“Beat, you’re an idiot,” Corn said.
“Hey, I am not!” Beat yelled indignantly.
“Yes, Beat. Yes you are,” Corn said.
“Listen,” Corn started, “you’re going to have to do something about this. If you like him, then go for it. If not, then let him down gently, but you can’t let him continue like this.” Beat was silent for a moment as he thought it over.
“Look,” Corn said, pointing down the street, “here he comes now,” Yoyo reached them and, between gasps for air, asked “What... you... say... anything?” Corn stood in one fluid movement and began to skate away.
“I’ll be with Gum if you need me,” he called over his shoulder.
“You need any help there?” Beat asked a panting Yoyo, who merely shook his head. After Yoyo finally caught his breath, they sat in silence.
“So,” Beat began, taking a sudden fascination in his gloves, “you, uh, like me, huh?” Yoyo had to remind himself to breathe at his words before nodding frantically.
“I’m sorry and I can totally understand if you,” Yoyo began, but he was cut off by Beat’s mouth on his own.
“Never want to see me again.” he finished dazedly as Beat pulled away.
“Come on,” Beat said with a smile, “let’s go inside, my treat.”
“So,” Beat started as they went into the restaurant, “you like chicken?”
