A/N: A highly fluffy unbetaed ficlet with mild R/S. Feedback is always loved and rewarded with virtual chocolate :D

Remus doesn’t like sleeping alone every night.

During the day, he’s surrounded by people. He can mix into the crowd, always with James, Peter and Sirius. He feels safe then.

But at night, when he’s alone in a dark, quiet room, with only the faint sounds of heavy breathing from the other three sleeping boys, he doesn’t feel safe. He feels exposed and vulnerable. He wants to be at home, curled up with his father like he used to do as a young child. The chilling silences echo through Remus’s sleep-deprived brain and he lies still, longing just to have the warmth, the touch of another person. The security of it.

Remus’ lack of sleep means he often hears the others whilst they are asleep. This is rarely very interesting- he hears Peter’s occasional incoherent muttering, as well as James’s light snores.

He also hears Sirius’s cries.

In the past fortnight, Remus has heard Sirius cry out every night, each time sounding worse than the last. As he lies motionless, he hears Sirius thrashing around in his sleep, whimpering, his shouts muffled. Remus does nothing, except curl up under the sheets and long for Sirius’s nightmare at that particular moment to end.

Sometimes it works. Often it doesn’t. Remus is left in the dark for hours, listening to Sirius’ painful cries and feeling powerless to stop them. Occasionally James or Peter are woken by the noise. Remus hears them stir and sit up in bed, slurring their speech sleepily.
‘Whassamatter? Whas that noise?
‘Go back to sleep,’ Remus always whispers. ‘It’s just Sirius. Go back to sleep.’
They always oblige. Remus is left alone again, staring into the dark.

One night Remus cannot stand it any longer. He can hear Sirius calling out for someone, anyone to help him. Both James and Peter have already woken twice, wondering what all the noise is about. Remus wants to calm Sirius, to look after him. Silently he slips out of bed and moves towards Sirius’s four poster. He gently pulls back the curtains.

Sirius is curled into a tight ball, clawing at the sheets, shaking. Remus bends down and watches him for a few moments. He notices Sirius’s hair, which is caught under the pillow. Remus gently lifts his head slightly to release it. Sirius stirs slightly, but dies not wake up.
‘Shhh Sirius,’ Remus whispers, gently stroking his tangled black hair. He is now less than a few inches away from Sirius’s face. ‘It’s OK. Moony… Moony’s here for you.’
Sirius’s cries lessen and he begins to relax. Remus hesitates, then reaches out for Sirius’ hand, hanging loosely off the edge of the bed. He strokes Sirius’s palm, watching his friend’s expression all the time. Sirius’s painful expression begins to soften, his face looking relaxed.
‘Moo...Moony?’ he mumbles.
‘That’s right, Padfoot,’ Remus whispers. ‘Everything’s fine. I’m here.’

Remus is unsure of what to do next. He knows what he wants to do, but will Sirius accept? He decides to take his chances. Slowly, he begins to lower himself into the bed. Sirius yawns, but makes no sign of protest. Remus rests his head on a corner of Sirius’s pillow, constantly watching him to check his expression. Sirius has calmed down now, and is beginning to look peaceful. Remus gently bends over, and kisses him on the cheek. Sirius opens one eye blearily and gazes at Remus.
‘Fankyou Moony,’ he slurs. Remus smiles.
‘What for?’
‘Fer… fer coming. Fer not leaving me,’ Sirius yawns. He stretches out slightly, his left hand flopping onto the mattress. Remus curls up next to him, lightly stroking Sirius’s palm, a smile spread across his face.

The following night, when Sirius starts to cry out again, Remus does not waste time wishing for Sirius’s nightmares to end. He moves over to Sirius’s bed immediately, and the crying soon stops.

Sirius’s nightmares gradually fade out. Within a few weeks, he is hardly having any. However the shared sleeping arrangements carry on, with both boys making no protest.
