What a wonderful Mother's Day Weekend it's been!  It all started Friday evening, with an actual, honest to goodness, date with my husband.  We did a movie matinee & then went out to dinner.  Well, we went to see the new Star Trek movie, and it was everything that was promised and then some.  I can remember totally falling in love with the original ( Read more... )

Now I feel a bit guilty for scaring you. That bruise looks much worse than it really is. For one thing, I'm extremely fair, and bruise if you just look at me cross-eyed. For another, by the time it LOOKS that bad, nearly all of the pain is gone.

That is actually two bow-string hits that merged into one spectacular bruise. The first hit was my very first shot, and I locked up my elbow, which is a common beginner's mistake. The second was my last shot of the day, and my muscles were too tired to control the bow. When I shot today, I wore a special protector for that part of my arm, but my shooting was much more controlled, and I didn't need it.

So, really, the simple way to avoid such a bruise is to wear a heavy shirt or sweater the first time or two that you shoot. Oh, and never shoot without a proper armguard for your forearm.

Interesting that you should mention a longbow, because I tried out a couple of bows, and the one I liked the most was a longbow.

Thank you! Thank you! Perhaps we can get together & go shooting some time. I've truly become quite fond of this sport.

Here's some bruising advice . . . (yeah I know you didn't ask for it but sweetie ~ that looks like it hurt!!)

Prescriptions for Healing
Some experts agree that certain vitamins and minerals can not only heal bruises but also prevent them. Though these nutrients work best at clearing up bruises when applied as topical creams, oral supplements may be helpful in warding off bruising as well. Here's what some doctors recommend.

Nutrient Daily Amount/Application

Oral:

Vitamin C 500-1,000 milligrams

Vitamin K 80 micrograms

Zinc 15 milligrams

Topical:

Vitamin C 10% lotion (Cellex-C)

Vitamin K 1% cream (Vitamin K Clarifying
Cream)

Homeopathic:
Also Arnica gel/cream & homeopathic Arnica tabs under the tongue!

But it REALLY doesn't hurt. It hurt when I first did it, but by the time the colors came out, it was fine again. (Of course, I'm not poking at it to see if it's sensative, either.)

It might not hurt ~ but it will when we turn elderly. Claim victory now!! Support yourself nutritionally to build stronger vessels. Just my 2cents.

Oh Nos!

I that happened to me the first time i did archery too. then i didnt do it again for about 4 years. I have since learned the proper way for a woman with hyperextensive elbows (like me, and probabbly you) to hold the bow. I dont think I can say in writing, but I will be happy to show you some time.

We should have a little girls group of archery at an event some time. too fun. (we can make column from stierbach be our Man-tourage and Reach around and show us how to shoot. Hee hee. He has nice hands...

Anyway. Congrats Archery for me is all about walking around with my friends outside. It is truly valid exercise.

Aren't you going to be at Sapphire? I'm going to bring my bow. Would you like to shoot then? The guy from Steirbach can totally come along & give us pointers. I would totally love to walk around with you & do some valid exercise. Perhaps I can get you & Gregor to come down for the Kingdom Archery Shoot in June?? Or we can get together at Pennsic & shoot. Just let me know when is convenient for you.
