I have no answers, but I agree that self-perception is a funny thing. One thought, though: Maybe it's because you didn't do it in the past? Self-perception is very slow in changing. Also, about the biking: if you don't do it as an actual racing or mountain touring sport, just riding your bike everywhere doesn't seem to be perceived as an activity that counts, even if it is longer distances.
Yeah Ive had very simmilar thoughts. I cycle everywhere, and now do it with my kid on the back. Hes 7 a small seven but it deffo adds to my exersize. Sometimes its quicker on the bike, and kess stressful than driving in traffic. People are always impressed, im quite suprised by my progress & stamina. ( i rode about 12 miles the other day without any disernable pain, i had nit noticed thia before.) But yeah people tell me i must be dead healthy, i do it mostly cause im poor. I do love cycling though, any commute has fun bits. I think it doesnt feel like sports untill its like a game people watch on the tv but only then when it involves watching it too. Which is daft because those people can be sports players but often really arnt.
Would you except into fitness? I would not about myself but maybe closer at keast in your case.
I know you're not really talking about language stuff here, but linguistically speaking I think it would be normal, given your interests, to describe yourself in German as 'sportlich'. However, in English you couldn't really describe yourself as 'likes to do sports' given your particular interests, because the connotations of that phrase have so much to do with team sports in particular.
