Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Went to see Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief for Staff's birthday on Sunday, with Dia and our mother. It was good enough that I've actually been thinking about it since, which has combined with rereading 'The Hollywood History of the World' by George MacDonald Fraser, a clever and interesting book about history as portrayed by Hollywood to ( Read more... )

You should read the books. They're very entertaining. Not high literature, or even as developed as Harry Potter, but very enjoyable reads.

Incidentally, Poseidon continues to be a Cool Dad while keeping good characterization. Oh, and they explain the Athena thing in a later book. (Second one, I think.)

The real thief has a hugely important role in the overall series, btw. I really, really like his characterization. You just want to hug him, despite everything!

I do plan to check the books out - the original and interesting take on the Greek Gods as they've survived to the modern era all by itself would be enough to catch my interest. I also liked that they didn't exposition-dump too much. We didn't need to know about Athena for the original story, so it made sense not to force the information in.

And I totally wanted to hug him! Slap him for using Percy and the others the way he did, mind you, but who could blame him for how he felt about the gods? (The look on his parent's face in the movie was one of those worth-a-thousand-words moments - 'look, I don't even know the kid, I had nothing to do with this', says the face and the shrug) Zeus executed *his* father personally for treating him badly, after all, and at least Kronos took at least one look at his kids while they were on their way down! Very classical, I liked it.

There's going to be a lot more about his parent's relationship -- mostly in the last book. Okay, not a lot more, but enough to be significant.

Oh, and there's a very good explanation for why the Big Three don't father children anymore! It's only alluded to in the first book, but it's pretty much the major plot point of the series. ;) Prophecy, what else?
