The kind of crap that your step mother played on you is symptomatic of how truly sick she is. Even as a basic human.

Huh. Interesting. From how I have heard she treated her step-daughter, she lost status as a basic human long long ago in my far less than humble opinion. Sounds more like an alien monster who came to the planet and married in order to have someone to abuse. E coming out as the beautiful person that she is after surviving that is a true testament to her character.

I think about her being so scared at the threat from a lover of outing my mom in the news and ensuring she would never see my brother or me again

Wow. It's bad enough that there are evil, biased, bigoted scumbags out there that would make such a threat, but from a lover? Oof. Or did you mean your mom would be accidentally outed because said lover was marching in a parade and there would be "guilt" by association?

Oh, worse than that. She was threatening to sue my mother and make it very public. She told my mother that this would be a huge ugly news story and that it would guarantee she'd never see us again.

My mother caved to these bullying tactics and sold just about everything she had to satisfy her ex's financial demands.
