thinky thoughts about perception and presentation

A few weeks ago, I was told by several people that they enjoy the things I post on Facebook. This is something I've been told privately as well, and it always surprises me. I know it isn't about everything I share - I know that if I share medical articles, for example, that the discussion will generally be not so pleasant. Which frustrates me.

I wonder about my online presence vs. my "real life" presence sometimes, too.

There are times when I think I'm more honest here in the virtual universe (particularly here on LJ -- there are things I've written about here that I would NEVER say out loud).

But, still, I think that it's still me. Of that makes any sense. I'm not lying or creating a second persona, I just tell other stories here.

On the other hand, when you find out someone has spoken ill of you (once verified and confronted), it does much to weed out the folks who, well...are perhaps not your friends?

It does. In the most dramatic case, someone that primarily knew me through a mutual 'friend' stated the opinion that I was 'a waste of human flesh.' When I asked the 'mutual friend' about this opinion, her only response was, "I'm sorry you heard that."

Good riddance to them both, of course.

(The irony is that the 'mutual friend' went so far as to block me on FB, after the dissolution of our relationship, and as recently as last year was still actively avoiding me at social events as if she were an injured party. *shrug* We all write our own scripts.)
