Part of me thinks he's speaking metaphorically with the "scream and cheer and vomit" statement, but he's also Eli so I'm not entirely sure.
I think it's normal for him to want to try his hand at a new genre, but I don't really know how I feel about him completely leaving it. Sure, Sami Raimi and Peter Jackson switched it up, but there have been countless other directors who haven't. :/
I hope he's being metaphorical. But I've seen some romantic comedies that made me vomit so I'm not sure. :-p Actually the only non-horror thing that ever made me vomit was an episode of "Without a Trace," so I know it's possible. I guess we'll see.
The only piece of "cinema" that has ever pushed me to the boundary of vomiting was Diary of a Cannibal directed by Ulli Lommel. It's labeled as horror, but it isn't, and it made me want to shoot myself in the face.
But back the topic: I don't think he'd ever entirely leave horror, though. He appears to love it too much.
He might also be feeling the weight of all the nasty shit people say about him and just want to leave for awhile. I hope he does make more horror movies in the future though, because he's great at it.
Everything Ulli Lommel makes is a huge pile of shit. That man shouldn't be allowed near a camera.
I love Eli to death but yes, he does tend to run his mouth a lot (Remember this is the guy who said he wasn't gonna make a sequel Hostel) but I think he's just board at the moment and wants to try something else.
I understand that, and Id like to see how he handles other genres, it just irritates me how he can't just say "I want to try something new," he has to be all snooty about it and say "I've pushed the envelope too much and now I'm moving on." Peter Jackson didn't come out and make a big statement and say "I've pushed the envelope too much, now I'm moving on" he just loved making movies and so he made whatever caught his fancy and he was good at it, and I think Eli could be good at different things too because he does love movies, I just wish he'd drop the attitude a little. He doesn't always have ;that attitude; either he comes across really badly in some of his interviews or he tries on this persona in interviews where he has to be cool and detached and it just doesn't work. That irritates me. Gah.
Like everyone else here, I feel like Eli loves the genre too much to ever leave it completely. He's wanted to do a teen sex comedy for a long time now, and I feel like he needs to do that (and Trailer Trash) first before he comes back to the horror scene.
And besides, I'm going to lead the riot if he doesn't direct Cell. Let's be serious.
That kind of got me too. I know a lot of people think Hostel pushed a lot of boundaries, but mostly these are people who haven't watched much horror. I suppose that for more mainstream movies, Hostel does show a lot of violence that people might not be used to seeing (especially when they're used to more violence implied instead of actually shown).
But Eli is always hyping himself, that's what stands out to me most about all his statements about himself and his movies. He's almost better than William Castle that way, he's a hypemaster and gets publicity for his films with his mouth. :-p
i'm always lookin' for a great reason to vomit, hahaha.
i think that no matter what kinds of movies he makes, they will be good, and i will enjoy them. this kidn of reminds me of one of my favorite writers: she began with horror and moved on to something different. a lot of people seemed not to like to new stuff just because it was different. it's as though artists are expected to compartmentalize their talent. i think it's great when people try new things.
