I am going to look on it as the opportunity to reconstruct something better on the spot where the edifice once stood, and then I am going to make a valiant effort to actually back up my stuff regularly. *sigh

Oh bollocky bollocks with a side of arsey bum poo. I once lost two day's worth of writing to a buggy flash drive (while on super-extension for the exchange), and it was AWFUL. That story also killed my old laptop, but thankfully, it was a gradual death, so nothing was lost other than the time it took me to replace the computer.
I second Tonksie's suggestion of DropBox, because if your story file lives in the little Dropbox folder, every time you save or the program saves for you while you're connected to teh interwebz, it goes into the cloud. It's the closest to mindless backup I've yet discovered, which is why it's perfect for me!
*huge hugs* I'm so sorry you lost so much work. But at least, having done it, when you re-write it, it sort of comes out pre-edited, since you only remember the important bits and memorable phrases. Best of luck recovering from the $@#%@#%@#& Trojan Horse, and may your story be even better for the experience!
I actually flirted a bit with Dropbox. I see now I should have just crawled into that bed.
My brother the brilliant computer expert thinks it might still be possible to at least grab that one file. Somehow. I will give it a shot or two, what's the worst that could happen?
I shouldn't ask questions like that, should I?
At least I've got work--I'm filming two episodes of "Bones" on Wednesday, so that makes up for some of the arsey bum poo.
Anyhoo, Happy new Year---your holidays sounded grand! (I read about 'em on borrowed 'puters while I was away.)
After two years, I'm still trying to reconstruct two fully written stories that I lost from not one but two laptop failures. Electronics and I don't mix, apparently. Just ask my smart phone.
Dropbox and Googledocs are now my best friends. *hugs you*
Oh, that bites. May I rec Threat Fire? Set it up to automatically update and it runs in the background, differently from any other security program. It works best with another program such as Microsoft Security Suite and catches stuff before it does any damage. You can check each week and be surprised at how many attacks it fends off, quietly and in the background. Best of all, it's free (as is Microsoft Security Essentials).
My brother (a computer expert, who unfortunately lives 3,000 miles away) is talking me through a possible way to recover the file. My fingers are very firmly crossed.

When computers work, they are marvels. When they do not, they are screaming three-year-old children smashing the crockery.
I have flirted with Dropbox. Guess I need to start sleeping with the cloud.
